Chapter 12

700 Words
That evening, the cabin was quiet save for the soft crackle of the fire. Calliope was tucked into bed, her even breaths barely audible from her room. Juniper and Kael sat together at the table, a simple meal finished between them. The moment felt intimate, the kind of quiet that invited truths to be spoken. Juniper fidgeted with the edge of the blanket draped over her shoulders, her heart racing. She hadn't been sure when or how to tell him, but the words felt heavy inside her, needing to be released. "Kael," she began, her voice soft but steady. He looked up, his silver-gray eyes meeting hers with quiet attentiveness. "What is it?" She hesitated, then took his hand in hers. "There's something I need to tell you. Something Calliope noticed earlier today." His brow furrowed slightly, concern flickering across his face. "What's wrong? Is she all right?" "She's fine," Juniper reassured him quickly. She took a deep breath, gathering her courage. "It's me. I'm...I'm pregnant, Kael." The words hung in the air, heavy and electric. Kael's eyes widened, his mouth parting slightly as if to speak, but no sound came out at first. Then, slowly, his expression softened, and a smile broke across his face. "Juniper," he whispered, his hand tightening around hers. "That's...incredible." Tears welled in her eyes at his reaction, and she let out a shaky laugh. "I wasn't sure how you'd feel." He stood, pulling her up with him, and wrapped her in a tight embrace. "How could I feel anything but grateful? This...this is a gift, Juniper. Another life." They held each other for a long moment, the firelight casting dancing shadows around them. For Juniper, it was a moment of hope - a promise of a future she hadn't dared to imagine. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Later that evening, as Juniper tidied up the cabin and Kael stepped outside to gather more firewood, Rylen followed him into the cold night. Snow crunched beneath their boots as they walked toward the edge of the clearing, where the traps and supplies were stored. Kael turned when he heard Rylen approach, his expression unreadable. "Something on your mind?" Rylen folded his arms, his sharp gaze cutting through the darkness like a blade. "You didn't tell her, did you?" Kael tensed, his jaw tightening. "Tell her what?" "You know what I mean, Kael," Rylen said, his tone low and biting. "About what you did before we ended up here." Kael's eyes narrowed, and he took a step closer, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "That's in the past, Rylen. It doesn't matter now." "Doesn't matter?" Rylen scoffed, his breath fogging in the freezing air. "You think she wouldn't care if she knew what you were capable of? What you've done?" Kael's expression darkened, a flicker of something cold and ruthless passing across his features before he quickly masked it. "What I did was for survival. For the mission." Rylen's gaze didn't waver. "I know what I saw. And I know that man isn't the same man she sees when she looks at you." Kael turned away, his fists clenched at his sides. "I'm not that man anymore," he said quietly, almost to himself. Rylen stepped closer, his voice softening but losing none of its intensity. "Maybe you've changed, Kael. Maybe she's helped you become better. But secrets have a way of surfacing. If you want a future with her, you'll need to face the truth - sooner or later." Kael didn't respond, his gaze fixed on the dark, snow-covered woods beyond the clearing. Rylen sighed, his breath heavy with frustration. "For her sake, I hope you make the right choice," he said, turning and heading back toward the cabin. Kael remained where he was, the weight of Rylen's words pressing down on him like the bitter cold. Inside the cabin, Juniper's laughter drifted faintly through the walls, the sound warm and full of life. Kael closed his eyes, a pang of guilt twisting in his chest. He wanted to protect Juniper and Calliope from everything - even from himself. But the past had a way of catching up, and he wasn't sure how long he could keep it at bay.
