The days ahead seemed to rush by, each one a blur of preparation and anticipation. The signs of spring were faint but undeniable—longer days, the faint drip of melting snow from the roof, and the occasional gust of warmer wind. The thaw was coming, and with it, the reckoning they all feared. Juniper’s body changed with the days, her once-flat stomach now showing the faint curve of new life. She caught herself absently resting her hand on the growing bump, her emotions a jumble of joy, fear, and uncertainty. Calliope, ever perceptive, often reached out to place her small hand against her mother’s belly, humming softly as if listening for the new life within. “She’s strong,” Calliope said one evening as they sat together by the fire. “The hum is soft, but it’s there. Like a little star.”
