Arliss looked up at the black glass-and-metal skyscraper rising up before him. The towering building made him feel small and inconsequential. The structure was so tall its top was lost among the clouds, which now spit down a mixture of rain and snow that felt like needles on his exposed skin. He stood shivering on the sidewalk, staring listlessly at the taxis lined up on the circular drive at the building’s entrance. The revolving doors said simply The Park at Addison, and they, along with banks of spotless floor-to-ceiling windows, revealed a lobby of ecru and cream marble.
