Do you know how does it feel to chase a dream that you are dreaming for your whole life? Doing everything you need to do just to catch your dream. I know, chasing a dream is never easy and it will never be. It takes strength and hard work. A strong mind to let things go. It needs patience and devotion. It takes every bit of your strength and only then dreams turn into reality. Just as my dream was standing in front of me.
I was staring at the main entrance of my dream University. It was a dream coming true. I still couldn't believe I was going to study here miles away from my family, my home and my country. Everything around me looked so colourful so bright. Everything around me was new. Now I was going to spend my next five years here. In the UK.
Oh, I forgot to introduce myself. My name's Ayra Haque. I was from Bangladesh. I came to the UK 6 days ago to complete my graduation and higher studies. I got admission to my dream University through a 100% scholarship. And my major was International Relation. Coming from a society where people starved to death, stepping on my own feet and taking my responsibility in a whole new world was challenging. It took strength and patience.
I was from a lower-middle-class Bengali family. I came to this country to fulfil my and my mother's dream. A dream which I was dreaming since I was a child. And now I was in front of the gate of my dream and today was my first day at the University.
I came out of my thoughts by the honking of a car. I entered the university campus and looked at my surroundings. It was a completely new world for me. There were a lot of students from various countries. They belonged to various cultures. They also came here leaving their family to achieve their dreams.
I entered the university and made my way toward the IR department. The university was really big with various departments. I started to look through the UV map and started to walk. Suddenly I bumped into someone and we both said "Ouch" at the same time.
I looked at the person and saw a girl of my age. She was very beautiful. She had a beautiful pair of hazel eyes and chestnut colour hair. She was almost the height as me. She was wearing a spaghetti dress. When I realized I was staring at her for too long I quickly apologized.
" I am sorry, I wasn't looking where I was going. I was a bit lost in the map." I told as I smiled apologetically.
She smiled at me and said " It's ok. I wasn't looking either."
I sighed in relief.
"Are you a freshman here?" She asked me and I nodded in confirmation.
" Yes. I was trying to find the Social Science building. Could you kindly tell me where is it?" I asked her politely. She smiled and said
" Sure, I was also going there as I am a freshman too. Come, we could go together."
I nodded smiled happily at her. I started to follow her and muttered thanks. She smiled and said
" Oh, I forgot to introduce myself. I am Hazel Wilson. I am in my first year of university and my major is International Relation " She said and looked at me I smiled at her.
" I am Ayra Haque, I am in my first year too and I am from Bangladesh" I also finished my introduction.
" Really? You are a Bengali? Wow! My mom is a Bengali too. But my dad is British " She said with a happy smile.
"So, basically you are half British and half Bengali?" I asked her with wide eyes. She laughed and said,
"Yeah, that's right."
" Does it mean you know the Bengali language? Bangla?" I asked her while walking.
"Yeah, not fluently but still I know."
"Wow, Then we could be great friends," I said to her with a wide smile.
She smiled happily at me and nodded in a "yes". She was very friendly and I wanted to befriend her. And I was happy with the fact that I made a friend on my first day.
"Let's check our schedule and see what we have in common."
Hazel said to me and I nodded. I was happy with the fact that she was also in the same department as me. So I won't be left alone among all the new people. We made our way to our lockers. Her locker was few lockers away from mine. We took our required books and stuff and made our way towards our first class. On the way, I got to know a lot of things about her and her family. She said her father was a businessman and her mother was a psychologist and they had a love marriage which I found cute. She also had an elder brother and a younger brother. The elder one was studying here in the same college and was studying Business Administration. She said he was in his final year. The younger one was in his junior year of high school.
We finally made our way to our class and took our seat in the second front row. I was a person who always sat in the front row all her life. It's funny but true. I sat on the first bench because I thought this way I'd be more focused and could listen to the teachers very well.
I started to look around and observed the room. Soon the room filled with more students. After few minutes the professor entered the class and started the lecture with a little introduction.
It was already break time. I and Hazel made our way towards the cafeteria. I was about to take a seat when Hazel asked what I wanted. I said I would have a sandwich and a Brownie. She nodded and we brought our food. We took our seat and we started to eat. I was thinking to find a part-time job as soon as possible. I needed to cover my other expenses. Though the University was providing me with everything I needed including a monthly allowance, still I needed to find a job. Hazel and I talked about our hobbies, families and plans. She was a bubbly character like me. We almost finished our eating when Hazel suddenly said,
" Look, that's my elder brother, Adeel."
I turned around and saw a few boys and girls were sitting at a table. They all seemed like the typical popular group. I saw who was Hazel pointing. The guy was sitting there with his face sideways. I couldn't see his face. The only thing I saw was his hair. I couldn't quite identify his hair colour cause I didn’t know about many hair colours except black, brown and blonde. He was wearing a blue shirt. His sleeves were folded. He looked muscular. Why isn't he turning around? I wanted to see his face. Come on, turn around. 3, 2,1.. I was counting backwards as I waited for him to turn around. But he didn’t.
I turned my head towards Hazel and asked her
" Why are you not sitting with your brother?"
Her face instantly got sour.
" I don't like his all friends. Especially the 3 of them." She said while pointing towards 2 girls and one boy.
I looked at them closely. " You see the boy with blonde hair?"
She said and I nodded and looked at the boy he had dark blonde hair, green eyes and fair skin. He was muscular and had well build physic. I must say he was handsome. I looked at Hazel to continue.
" Well, his name is Zeus O'Brian. He also studies business with my brother. And I hate to say that he was once my boyfriend and now my ex-boyfriend. We broke up 1 year ago or should I say he broke my heart. No one knew this except Me, Zeus and Amber, my high school best friend. And now you got to know. That's why I hate him." Hazel finished and looked away.
When she turned around and meet my eyes I gave her a tight smile. Was that boy crazy? How could he break this beautiful girl's heart? She smiled at me sadly and continued,
" The girl sitting beside Zeus is Amelia Carter, his current girlfriend." She said with bitterness in her voice. I looked at the girl with light blonde hair, light blue eyes and tanned skin with a slim figure. She was wearing a sundress. She was beautiful but not more than Hazel. I again looked at Hazel and she continued,
"And the last one, the girl sitting beside my brother is Ariana Miller. I am telling you she is a real b***h. I don't like her at all. She keeps clinging to my brother. She claims to be Adeel's girlfriend but I know Adeel gives her no s**t. And you can say she is the typical queen b***h" she said while glaring at the girl who was sitting beside her brother.
Ariana had golden hair, brown eyes and light skin with a slim figure. She was also beautiful. She was wearing a crop top and a mini skirt. Which reached her mid-thigh. She was clinging to Adeel and saying something to his ear which he completely ignored.
I noticed two more guys sitting at the table. They were also really handsome. Both of them had blonde hair and blue eyes.
"Who are they?" I asked Hazel pointing towards those two boys. I noticed she was a little lost and was looking at something. I turned my head towards where she was looking and saw Zeus was also looking in her direction. I understood that she still loved Zeus but refused to admit that because she was hurt.
She came out of her thoughts and said " The boy sitting beside Ariana is Aaron Williams and the other one is Zain Anderson. Adeel, Zain, Aaron and Zeus four of them are best friends from middle school. Since then They are inseparable." She said and I nodded.
The bell rang and we both stood up from our seat and headed out of the cafeteria for our next class. On the way out I tried to see Adeel's face but I couldn't as he turned his face to the other side. I felt a little disappointed but I brushed it off and followed Hazel. We entered our class and took our seat.
Finally, the bell rang indicating that it's time to leave. The teacher headed out followed by the students. I took my bag and headed out followed by Hazel. We went near our lockers and took out our things.
We reached the university gate. Hazel offered to drop me off at my dorm but I refused politely by saying it's okay I could manage. She gave up and I smiled. We bade our byes. She headed towards her home in her car and I started to walk towards my dorm which was only 10 minutes away from my University. I was planning to buy a cycle soon. It would be easier to travel with it. I was walking past the street. A cold breeze was hitting on my face, giving me a chilly feeling. Everyone was busy with their works. As I walked I thought about what would it feel like to be a bird and fly higher and higher. Did I need to think about the problems? Or would I be free from everything? I shook my stupid thoughts aside and continued walking.
I reached my dorm with various thoughts running through my mind. I entered my room and kept my bag aside. I went in front of my mini dresser and saw my reflection in the mirror. I stared at my face. I had tanned skin not too fair. Big blue eyes were rare for a Bangladeshi. Long wavy brown hair. I was 5'6 inch tall with a slim figure. I was just an average Bengali girl nothing special. I sighed and took out my PJs which includes a white tee shirt and blue printed leggings. I quickly changed into it and braided my hair. It was almost 2 pm and I was feeling really tired so I went to my bed and laid down and Soon sleep took over me.
