The moment the second man left the room, a heavy, suffocating silence fell on the room; this time, however, neither of us asked any questions as it became obvious we had no answers.
I sat very still against the cold stone wall, staring at the one they had called 'Alpha', trying to wrap my head around the fact that I was abducted by an animal... A FREAKING ANIMAL!!!
A few hours ago I would’ve laughed if someone had told me animals that could magically become humans were real. Now? I wasn’t laughing.
I could feel my vision try to drift off somewhere else as I felt the mark on my collarbone burn still. The ‘Alpha’ near the doorway.
Watching me, studying me like I was some kind of failed experiment. I hated it.
“Stop staring.”
His eyebrow lifted, pissing me off further.
“Stop being suspicious.”
I scoffed.
“You chained me to a freaking wall.”
“You crossed into restricted territory.”
“That’s not a valid way to chain me up.”
“It is here.”
FUCK! For a second couldn’t even come up with a comeback. The arrogance of this strong… good-looking---
Wait, what am I saying? “You know what? I’m done arguing with”
The corner of his eye twitched, and dear God…. Damn
'You're doing it again,' I said, fixated on the tiny ’almost-smile’ printed across his lips.
“What?”
“The thing.”
“What thing?”
“The almost-smile"
“It wasn’t a smile.”
“It was.”
“It wasn’t.”
Admitting defeat, I actually laughed. “You are annoying, you know?”
“Likewise.”
The sound of laughter surprised us both. What the actual f**k is going on?
I was trapped in a dungeon, chained to the wall, and yet here I am bickering with my captor.
My parents are probably worried sick searching for me, calling hospitals and informing the police, and here I was underground in a forest that apparently belonged to human-animal hybrids.
“How long?” I say, turning to meet his gaze.
The alpha frowned. “How long what?"
“How long have I been here?”
“Two days.”
His words slammed into me. “Two days?”
“You were unconscious.”
“No.” I shook my head violently as I felt another episode surface. “No, no, no.”
Mom was probably panicking, Dad crying in a corner. The thought of my father crying broke me.
This shouldn't be happening; the thought of Dad crying broke me.
I shut my eyes, refusing to see the same things that got me into this mess as a sudden spread of heat took claim to my collarbone; pain followed after.
The mark burnt, like someone was branding me with hot iron. My hand flew to my neck, but the Alpha caught it midway before getting there.
I froze.
Every muscle locked, my pulse thudding, and for the very first time, I forgot how to breathe.
The Alpha immediately let go, his jaw clenched. Whatever happened didn't make me feel alone.
I could see it in his eyes; he felt it too.
“What was that?” I demanded.
He turned, his eyes not meeting mine. “I don’t know.”
“LIAR.”
He finally turned to me, and the look on his face was one of pure terror. “I don't."
The answer came too quickly, too honestly to sound like a lie, and yet that scared me more. Because for the first time after waking up, he looked genuinely horrified.
The ‘Alpha’, the one in charge, was looking at me like I was kind of a freak; people like him thrive on control, and whatever was going on between us clearly wasn’t under his control.
Three knocks echoed through the dungeon; the Alpha straightened instantly. The atmosphere changed; the predator returned.
“Enter.”
The door opened and a woman stepped inside. Immediately every hair on my body stood up; she was painfully beautiful.
Her long, silver hair and green eyes added more to her features; everything about her screamed confidence, power and authority.
Then she looked at me, and her eyes gleamed, not with dislike, not with distrust, but with pure resentment.
The intensity of it startled me; we’d never met before, and yet when our eyes locked, I felt it: pure hostility.
“Darius.” She finally spoke, her voice smooth as silk.
The alpha, not paying attention to her, answered, “What is it?”
“The council is waiting.”
His expression darkened. “I know.”
Pain flared all over me as I started hyperventilating.
Her expression changed immediately as her gaze landed on my collarbone. “What is she?”
Good question; I’ve been asking myself the same all these years.
The Alpha moved, subtle at first, but as the woman threatened to move closer, I realised he had positioned himself between us protectively.
The woman noticed immediately, and judging by the way she clenched her fists, she didn’t like it.
Neither was I. Why was he protecting me? I was supposedly now a dangerous prisoner.
“Darius,” she said carefully.
“Leave, Lia.”
Her eyes narrowed.
“No.”
The room felt hotter for some reason; the tension between them was very visible, like predators sizing each other.
…… It was interesting, though, very interesting.
“I said leave.”
The authority in his voice sent a chill through me; even I felt the urge to obey.
A series of emotions flashed on a face in the span of seconds: anger, possessiveness, and jealousy.
“I hope you know what you’re doing.”
The Alpha didn’t respond as he watched her till she was out the door; I finally exhaled as silence returned once again.
I slowly looked at the alpha with one thought in mind: WHY?
"Well…" I didn’t even complete my sentence when he sighed and turned to face me.
“What?”
“Your girlfriend wants to see my head on a platter."
His expression flattened. “She isn’t my girlfriend."
“Sure.”
“She isn’t.”
“Interesting, so she’s just murderous for fun?”
He pinched the bridge of his nose as he sat down, saying, “You talk too much.”
“And you like avoiding questions.”
“Who was she?”
“Lia Evermoon.” He replied with the most sarcastic intonation I’ve ever heard.
“The name sounds important?”
“It is.”
“Good to know."
He rubbed his temples; it was my first time seeing him tired, and let’s just say… I may have had a few ideas.
