The Voice Of The Moon

1083 Words
The silence stretched between us. Darius sat across from me, arms crossed, trying not to stare. I sat chained to a wall, trying not to notice. Neither of us was convincing. "You know," I finally said, "for someone who kidn*pped me, you're surprisingly boring." His silver eyes lifted. "And you're surprisingly alive." I rolled my eyes. The mark on my collarbone burned. That wasn’t unusual. But this time, it wouldn’t stop. The heat spread across my chest. Then down my arms. Then through my whole body. I froze. Darius immediately stood. "Sapphire?" Something was wrong. Very wrong. The room blurred. The torches flickered violently. A strange pressure filled the air. It felt like the world itself was holding its breath. The chains around my wrists began rattling. Not because I moved though. They were shaking on their own. Darius stepped forward. "Sapphire." I tried to answer but nothing came out. The burning became unbearable. It felt like a brand being placed on every inch of my skin. My scream echoed through the dungeon. Every torch exploded. Darkness swallowed the room and for one terrifying second, everything stopped. Then silver light erupted from my body. The chains shattered. Darius staggered back, not from the explosion. From the power. The girl before him wasn't Sapphire anymore. Her feet slowly lifted off the ground. Silver light surrounded her like living moonlight. Her eyes opened. They weren't blue. They weren't human. They were completely silver. Ancient, endless and terrifying. The air itself bowed around her. Darius felt his wolf immediately submit. Not by choice, by instinct. His knees nearly hit the floor. "Impossible," he thought to himself. Nothing could force an Alpha to submit. Nothing. Yet his wolf was trembling. Every warrior instinct he possessed screamed the same thing. Divinity. Outside the dungeon, alarms erupted. Pack warriors flooded the halls. Ronan burst through the doorway. "What happened—" his voice died instantly. The Beta froze. Then dropped to one knee. Not willingly. Forced. More guards arrived. Then more. One after another, every wolf in the hallway collapsed under the pressure. Even the strongest couldn't remain standing. The silver-haired woman floating in the center of the room slowly turned her head. Except it wasn't Sapphire looking at them. Something older was wearing her face. "Children." The voice echoed from everywhere. Not loud, but not impossible to ignore. Some wolves began crying immediately. Others trembled. One guard dropped unconscious. The presence was just too much. Darius clenched his fists. "Who are you?" the Alpha managed to ask. The silver eyes shifted toward him. For the first time…the being smiled. A smile older than kingdoms. Older than packs. Older than anything anyone had memory of. "You know who I am." The room fell silent, no one dared breathe. The answer was obvious. And impossible. The Moon Goddess. Far away. Lucian Vale stopped running. His heart ceased as he turned his gaze towards the sky. "No..." Beside him, Clara dropped to her knees. Tears filled her eyes. "She awakened." Back in the dungeon, the Goddess looked through Sapphire's eyes. She studied Darius, then Ronan and then the wolves standing behind As if deciding whether they were worthy of existing. Then she spoke. "The balance weakens." The room trembled. Cracks spread across the walls. "The old laws have become corrupted." A distant thunder echoed despite the clear night sky. "You spill blood in my name." Several elders in the hallway turned pale. "You sacrifice the innocent." The torches reignited with silver flames. "You call it devotion," the Goddess's eyes narrowed. "I call it blasphemy." Every wolf present felt terror. Real terror. The kind that came from standing before something infinitely greater than themselves. Darius stared upward, his pulse hammering in his ears. For years he had followed the sacred laws. Protected them, enforced them. Now the Goddess herself was condemning them. Nothing made sense anymore. Then the silver eyes landed on him. Everything became still. "Darius Silvermoon." His breath caught. The Goddess stepped forward. Floating with a weightless beauty that terrified the Alpha. "The path before you ends in blood." The words hit like a hammer. "You will choose between your people and your heart." The mark on Sapphire's collarbone glowed brighter. "If you choose wrong...well, you’ll see." She said as her hand made contact with his head. A vision slammed into his mind. “Fire, war, mountains of corpses. A silver wolf standing atop them. Howling at a blood-red moon.” Darius staggered back, the vision vanished. The Goddess turned toward the doorway. Toward the gathering wolves. Toward the entire pack. Then she delivered the words that would haunt them forever. "The marked wolf has returned. Silence followed. Absolute silence. "The age of chains is ending." Nobody moved, nobody dared. The pressure continued to grow. Several warriors were now fully on their knees. Others had collapsed completely, even Ronan looked pale. The Goddess surveyed them silently, then her gaze shifted. Toward the hallway, toward someone approaching. Someone powerful. A second later, the crowd parted. Liandrin Evermoon stepped into view. For the first time since I met her, she looked afraid. Not angry. Not jealous. Afraid. The Goddess watched her. The silence became unbearable. Then she spoke. "Ambition." Liandrin stiffened. "You seek a crown." Nobody breathed. "You seek power." Liandrin's hands clenched. "You seek what was never yours." The words hit like physical blows, every wolf present heard them. And every wolf understood. The Goddess wasn't merely speaking. She was judging. Every wolf felt it. The prophecy. Not a story, not a myth, not a legend. Real. Standing right before them. Then the light vanished, the pressure disappeared. And Sapphire fell. Darius moved before she hit the ground, catching her. The moment she touched him, the last hints of divine power disappeared. She looked small again, fragile. Human. Her breathing was weak, her eyes closed. Unconscious. For a long moment, nobody spoke. Nobody moved. Nobody even dared look at one another. Finally, Ronan whispered the only thing anyone could think. "What..." His voice cracked. "...what is she?" Darius stared down at Sapphire sleeping in his arms. The warmth of her body, the mark still glowing faintly. The prophecy still ringing in his ears. Then he answered. "No." His grip tightened. Fear settled deep in his chest. "That's the wrong question." The entire dungeon became silent again, because for the first time since finding Sapphire— The Alpha was afraid. And if Darius Silvermoon was afraid... Then everyone else should be terrified.
