The evening had settled in, soft and quiet.
There was a gentle knock on Misses Ajmal’s door.
It was Mrs. Ahmad.
"Sister, do you remember? We were supposed to go to the bazaar today."
Misses Ajmal smiled. "Yes, of course we were. I thought maybe you’d be busy."
"Not at all, Sister. I’m completely free."
"Then let’s go," Misses Ajmal said.
"Wait, let me just ask Minkii first. Until then, could you please tell Zain to get ready and drive us?"
"Where is Zain?"
"I saw him heading to tennis."
"Alright, I’ll go to him. You get Minkii and yourself ready."
"Okay, Sister."
With that, Misses Ahmad left to call Minkii, while Misses Ajmal headed toward the tennis court to find Zain.
Inside her room, Minkii stood in front of the mirror, recording a video.
Another soft knock.
"Who is it?"
"It’s me, dear. May I come in?"
"Yes, Mamma, come in."
" Dear, there’s no need to knock. You can come anytime."
"No, Dear. Manners are manners."
"Okay, as you say."
Mamma’s voice softened. "Daughter, I came to tell you we’re going to the market. To buy something for the house. Go get ready with Zain. Help me and your aunty with the shopping. We don’t really understand these things. You’ll help us, right?"
"Okay, Mamma. I’ll just change in two minutes. I’m ready otherwise. You change too."
"Alright." And with that, Mamma left.
The door closed. Minkii opened her wardrobe.
"What should I wear... what should I wear..."
"Hmm... I’ll wear something that makes Zain’s heart skip a beat the moment he sees me. Something that makes him unable to look away."
Minkii knew it. Zain adored her.
And tonight, she wanted to be unforgettable.
Not because she didn’t care, but because this was their game.
They fought, they teased, they drove each other crazy.
But it was never an ordinary fight.
It was a fight made of love.
They say those who fight the most, love the deepest.
And that line was written perfectly for Minkii and Zain.
"Hmm... this one." y
She pulled out a baggy jeans, a striking red top, and a small bag.
"Yes. This will do."
She walked into the washroom, changed, and stepped back out.
The mirror reflected her back, glowing.
"Wow... I look beautiful in this."
She had ordered this dress just two days ago. It was the first time she was wearing it.
The red top against her fair skin made her look radiant.
She slipped on white sneakers, picked up her bag, and walked out of the room.
Upstairs, Misses Ajmal was already climbing the stairs to call Zain.
.....
Zain was sitting on a chair, busy scrolling his phone.
"Zain , what are you doing?"
"Nothing much, just scrolling i********: reels," he replied casually.
"Alright dear, can you please take us to the market?"
"Not today. Maybe some other day."
"Dear, there are only one or two days left. Just tomorrow and the day after. And then it’s Annie’s birthday. We still have to do the preparations. And it’s a surprise for Annie. If she finds out, the fun will be ruined."
"Come on dear, please."
"Fine, fine. I’ll take you tomorrow morning. First thing."
"Tomorrow morning? You? You don’t even wake up early."
"I will wake up early tomorrow. I promise. Come on, get up. We’re all ready. Minkii and your aunt are ready too."
The moment he heard Minky’s name, Zain’s face lit up.
"Okay, okay. I’m coming."
Mrs Ajmal raised an eyebrow. "What happened? A second ago you were refusing, and now you agreed so quickly?"
Zain got up, put one arm lightly around her shoulder and said with a grin, "When my mother asks, how can I say no?"
She tugged his ear lightly. "Behave yourself, Zain. Behave. Or you’ll get a good scolding from me one day."
She gave him a playful tap on the head. Zain stuck his tongue out dramatically, overacting on purpose.
They all walked out, already ready.
The moment Zain’s eyes fell on Minkii he froze. He just kept looking at her.
"Minkii, you little... you look so pretty," he said, walking over to stand beside her. In a low voice he added, "You look really beautiful."
Minkii smirked. "I know. But thanks for the compliment anyway."
"Now go stand away from me," she teased and immediately went to stand next to Mrs Ajmal.
Zain didn’t like that at all. He muttered under his breath, as if saying, "Just wait. I’ll see you. I _will_ see you."
And then they all left for the market.
At home, Mr Ajmal wasn’t there. He had gone for an important client meeting at a restaurant.
Anu was sleeping in her room. She had no idea everyone had gone to the market, because no one told her.
They were planning to get her a surprise gift. That’s why they left without telling her.
....
The house was almost empty. Only Annie and Anns were there.
About ten minutes later, the doorbell rang. Anus came out and looked around. No one was in the house.
He asked the servant, "Come here. Sir, where did go?"
"Sir Ali has gone out for a client meeting. And the rest of the family went to the market."
"What do you mean everyone went? With whom?"
"With Zain sir."
"Okay, everyone went?"
"No sir. Annie madam didn’t go. Everyone else did."
"What? Annie didn’t go?"
"No sir."
Hearing that Annie was home alone, Anus got really happy. A killer smile spread across his face.
He said, "Alright, listen. Make me one cup of tea. Quick."
He started walking toward the kitchen, then stopped. "Never mind. Just bring me one glass of fresh water. Hurry."
He took the water from Seven, drank it, and headed straight upstairs. All the kids’ rooms were upstairs.
He called out, "Seven!"
"Yes sir?"
"I’m going to my room. Don’t disturb me."
"Okay sir."
And then he walked straight to Annie’s room.
"Annie... Annie... You’re all alone... and I..."
He knocked. Annie was lying down reading a book.
"Come in? Who’s it?" she murmured to herself.
She opened the door and there he was, standing with his arms crossed.
For a few seconds there was silence. When no sound came, she put the book down and looked up. The moment she saw him, her eyes went wide. They just wouldn’t close.
"You... you’re here?"
"Yes. Why wouldn’t I come?" Anus said.
Annie quickly sat up on the bed.
"No, no, you can’t come in here."
"Oh? And why not?"
Annie stood up on the bed and motioned for him to go back. But he was still standing there, arms crossed.
He immediately locked the bedroom door.
Seeing that, Annie broke into a sweat.
"What......what are you doing? Why... why are you locking the door? Open it! I’ll shout for everyone!"
"Okay. Shout. Go ahead and shout."
"No one’s going to come here suddenly. Because it’s just you and me in the house. Only us."
"What? We’re alone? Where did everyone go?"
"Wherever they went, I don’t care. Come down and come to me."
He gestured for her to come toward him.
Terrified, Annie pressed herself against the headboard of the bed. In her mind she thought: What a strange man. He scares, he threatens, and now he’s forcing me to come to him. I’m not going. I’m not going near him.
Then Anus said in a loud, firm voice:
"Are you not understanding me? I’m calling you. Come here."
She shakes her head.
"No, I won’t come to you."
"How do you mean you won’t come? You have to come to me."
He shouts.
Tears choke her. Annie stands up immediately and takes slow steps toward him. She stops a few steps away from Anus. Her face is down and tears are streaming from her eyes.
Anus puts one hand on his waist and the other on his head.
"Ugh God! You and your crying. You start crying so fast. Am I going to eat you? Huh? Tell me, did I even say anything to you? Am I eating you? Tell me, Annie."
Annie stays silent.
Anus roars: "Tell me!"
"No... no... you didn’t say anything to me," she stammers.
"Then what’s there to cry about?"
She keeps her head lowered.
Then Anus pulls her toward himself with his hand. He wraps an arm around her waist and pulls her so close that there’s no space left between them.
Annie’s heartbeat goes haywire. Her heart is pounding so hard. Anus can hear the sound of her heartbeat clearly. And hearing that makes him even more intoxicated. It gives him a strange kind of pleasure.
While Annie feels like the ground has slipped from beneath her feet.
Anus tightens his grip on her waist.
"Look at me."
She doesn’t. He gently lifts her face toward him.
"Why are you scared of me?"
Only tears are falling from Annie’s eyes.
Anus realizes she’s terrified.
Then he turns her around, takes her place, and puts Annie where he was standing. Slowly, he leads her toward the wall.
Annie shrinks against the wall.
Anus plants both arms on the wall, one on each side of her head.
And then... he kisses her neck.
Annie felt like her soul was leaving her body. Her heart started beating wildly.
Then Anus lifted her chin and leaned closer to her face.
"Don’t be scared of me," he whispered hoarsely in her ear. "I won’t say anything. Just a little love. Just a little love. Nothing more."
Annie couldn’t understand his words.
Deep down, Annie was furious with him. She thought he was a terrible, negative man who was doing such awful things to her.
But the truth was the exact opposite.
Anus loved her beyond reason. He wanted her. But Annie had no idea about that.
Then Anus held her face gently and lifted it.
"Tell me. From today, you don’t need to be afraid of me. I won’t say anything to you, Annie."
"I’ll tell everyone about you," she said. "About what you do to me. I’ll tell everyone."
"What do you mean, what do I do to you? What have I done to you?"
"I’ll tell everyone about this... this thing you just did," she sobbed, trembling.
"First, stop crying. Go completely silent. You start crying at everything."
"I’ll tell everyone."
"Go ahead and tell. Let’s see. I’ll take your life."
He said it to scare her.
Then Anus grabbed her arm, took her to the bed, sat her down beside him and said,
"Annie, I don’t have any wrong intentions about you. Okay? I know it’s hard for a girl to accept things from a guy. But believe me, I don’t have any wrong intentions about you. And at the right time, I’ll tell you the whole truth. Until then, keep your mouth shut. And don’t ever stop me from coming close to you. Got it?"
He tried to calm the crying Annie.
"You’re so bad. So bad," Annie cried.
"Yeah, I know. You don’t have to tell me. Now be quiet. Stop crying, Annie."
Annie thought to herself, Is Anus telling the truth? Does he not have wrong thoughts about me? Should I trust him?_
Then Anus said, "Yes. You should trust me."
"How did you know what I was thinking in my heart?" she asked in an innocent voice.
"I know everything about you. Everything. Okay? Trust me. If you trust me, it’ll be very good for you. If you don’t... I promise I’ll never come in front of you again. The decision is in your hands now."
He left her there and walked out of her room.
Annie was left behind, only thinking about what he had said.
