Sophie sat on a half-finished wooden bench, her notepad forgotten in her lap. Around her, the unfinished walls of The Haven pulsed with life. Volunteers bustled in every direction—painting, unpacking donated furniture, installing light fixtures. The scent of fresh lumber mixed with the faint aroma of coffee from a makeshift refreshment table in the corner.
There was something different about this place. It wasn’t polished, wasn’t corporate. It felt real. Human.
And that unsettled her more than she cared to admit.
