đ Chapter 16: Collateral Damage
Part 1 & Part 2
Part 1
Nova reached the surface just as the last support beam behind her collapsed, sending plumes of dust spiraling upward into the ashen sky. The world above wasnât much betterâan eerie, amber glow bathed the ruined landscape, casting long shadows over what remained of the outpost perimeter.
The hybrids were already here.
Not the mindless scavengers she rememberedâthese moved in sync, with eerie precision, eyes glowing a sinister shade of blue. And at their center was something she hadnât seen before.
A humanoid figure. Too tall. Too still. Wearing something that looked like armor fused with organic plating.
Her HUD blinked violently.
[Unknown Entity Detected.]
[ERROR: Data mismatch. Entity does not exist in timeline records.]
âWhat the hell?â she whispered.
A sharp cry broke her trance. Eli. Nova spotted him pinned behind an overturned vehicle, his rifle jammed and blood seeping from his side.
âCover him!â she shouted to the few remaining fighters. Without waiting, she launched herself forward, bullets slicing the air around her.
She slid into cover beside Eli. âYouâre lucky I hate funerals.â
He gave her a pained smile. âCouldâve fooled me. You came charging like a lunatic.â
âShut up and let me fix this.â She tore open a medkit, her hands working fast.
Eli grabbed her wrist. âThey werenât supposed to find us.â
âI know,â Nova said darkly. âBut they did. And weâre not ready.â

Part 2
The hybrids began to retreatâintentionally. Not defeated, but as if their mission was complete. The humanoid figure stared directly at Nova for one long, cold moment⊠then vanished into the shadows of the forest.
[Threat Level: Critical.]
[Timeline Divergence Increasing.]
[System Stability: 52%]
Back in the war room, the remaining team members gathered, exhausted, confused, and bleeding.
Nova stood in front of the flickering map table, her voice flat. âThis wasnât a random attack. This was a message.â
âWhat kind of message?â someone asked.
Nova turned, her eyes locked with Eliâs. âSomeone else knows the future⊠and theyâre rewriting it too.â
Silence fell over the room.
Then came the systemâs voiceâcolder than before.
[Initiating Directive Override.]
[User Designation: No longer Sole Timeline Operator.]
âWhat does that mean?â Nova whispered.
The answer came instantly.
