📘 Chapter 16: Collateral Damage Part 1 & Part 2 Part 1 Nova reached the surface just as the last support beam behind her collapsed, sending plumes of dust spiraling upward into the ashen sky. The world above wasn’t much better—an eerie, amber glow bathed the ruined landscape, casting long shadows over what remained of the outpost perimeter. The hybrids were already here. Not the mindless scavengers she remembered—these moved in sync, with eerie precision, eyes glowing a sinister shade of blue. And at their center was something she hadn’t seen before. A humanoid figure. Too tall. Too still. Wearing something that looked like armor fused with organic plating. Her HUD blinked violently. [Unknown Entity Detected.] [ERROR: Data mismatch. Nova spotted him pinned behind an overturned vehicle, his rifle jammed and blood seeping from his side. “Cover him!” she shouted to the few remaining fighters. Nova stood in front of the flickering map table, her voice flat. “This wasn’t a random attack. This was a message.” “What kind of message?” someone asked. Nova turned, her eyes locked with Eli’s. “Someone else knows the future
and they’re rewriting it too.” Silence fell over the room. Then came the system’s voice—colder than before. [Initiating Directive Override.] [User Designation: No longer Sole Timeline Operator.] “What does that mean?” Nova whispered. The answer came instantly.
