Chapter 4. Losing Everything.

Janet’s face darkened as she replied. “Who are you calling a thief? Do you know I can sue you for libel? I didn’t steal anything. If I did, would I be walking free?” “I don’t care. Leave my house now. Move your filthy things out this instant. In fact, I’ll call my men to throw them out,” the homeowner warned. All her entirety fell on deaf ears. Before she knew it, her things were stacked outside the door. “I don’t want a criminal living in my house. Here is a refund of your one-month rent. Now get out.” Janet, stunned, argued. “What you are doing is illegal, you just served me the notice. This is unfair.” Since the homeowner refused her pleas, she gathered her belongings and secured them beside the doorstep and hallway and left the house. At that time, it was noon. Where would she stay? Still, when she recalled how her employer abandoned her in detention for three days, she was infuriated. “I’ll go to the office and give the human resources manager a piece of my mind. I …I have to look for another job. Authentic Design Company's personnel management is appalling. … She furiously went to the Authentic Design Company, Reception. “Hello Jennifer!” Janet said. Jennifer arrogantly, sneered. “Who let you out? I heard you stole from our client’s house?” Janet, dumbstruck, trembling and white as a sheet of paper, replied. “How … How can you judge me so harshly? Have I ever stolen from you? Anyway, I’ll deal with you later.” Nevertheless, just as she was about to enter the elevator to the floor where her office was located, her phone message alert chimed. She stopped and mumbled. “Oh, a message from the Human Resources Manager. I wonder what it might contain.” Her brow creased. “Could it be that they are sending me an apology letter considering their betrayal these past three days? Let me see what it is about. It…it must be important.” On opening it, Janet was stopped dead in her tracks. The message read: “Your services are no longer required. We have credited your account with one month pay in lieu of notice.” Janet, shocked beyond words, grumbled. “Who is working overtime to ruin me? I can’t think of any important person I’ve offended. Where do I go from here?” After careful thought, her face suddenly brightened. She had an idea. … Janet quickly phoned Nora, her best friend from a rich family who lived alone. The phone rang but she didn’t pick up. The last time they spoke, Nora was on leave. She thought she could stay with her temporarily until she got another apartment. Having made that decision, Janet hailed a taxi, to take her to Nora’s home. After a short drive, she was standing at the gate of a secluded two-bedroom bungalow in the center of Middleton city. She opened the gate which wasn’t locked and knocked on the door. But, no one answered. When she pushed the door, it opened, so she let herself in. Inside the sitting room, she saw that male and female clothing was strewn all over the floor. Smiling knowingly, Janet thought. “Umm! My best friend is having a good time. Who could have thought … but wait!” She remembered that Nora parted with her cheating boyfriend last month. So she was confused who she was with. She just assumed that maybe they had reconciled. Janet made up her mind not to disturb them and to stay at the gatehouse until they finished their business. But as she was about to leave the sitting room, she heard familiar voices. Oh! So sweet… yes! You are delic…IOUS Nora. Really? Am I not better than Ja… net? Far … bet..ter. Janet was frozen by the voice and thought. “Is that not Damien’s voice?” Janet heard her name and went towards the room as if pulled by a magnet and pushed the door open. When she saw her best friend and boyfriend in an intimate embrace, she was cut to the heart, mouth agape and transfixed by the image before her. She shouted. “Damien! Nora! This is too much. Damien, what have I done for you to do this… this with my ..my best friend?” The two caught napping tried to cover their nakedness with the bedsheets. “Nora! So shameless. Why did you do this to me? How long have you both been doing…this behind my back?” Damien, unapologetic, lashed out. “You are to blame for this, Janet? You never let me touch you.” You’re just a frigid old woman.” Nora didn’t have any excuse, yet she found one. “Janet! It’s Damien that started this. He had been pursuing me for a long time. Now, we are in love with each other.” She kissed his cheek and held him closer. As if realizing that what she said wasn’t enough, she added. “Since you can’t satisfy your man, you lost him. It’s your fault.” However, when Damien realized the seriousness of what he had done, overcome with shame, he kept looking down while Nora unashamedly continued to spout nonsense. Janet was heartbroken and as her eyes reddened and tears were about to start falling like tiny rain drops, she ran out of the flat, thinking, “I won’t let them see my tears. No! I won’t give them the satisfaction of seeing my tears.” Out on the street and in a world of her own, she was trying to rationalize what she saw and recover from the shock and thought. “How could Damien and Nora hurt me so brutally? Next to my mother, they are the two people I trust wholeheartedly. How could they openly rip my heart to pieces? How?” Wiping her tears, she made up her mind. “People are wicked and no one is to be trusted. From now, I’ll trust no one. There is no true friendship out there.” As she was hurriedly walking away from the heart-rending scene in Nora’s house, she received an urgent call. Although her eyes were red, puffy and teary, when her phone rang, and she saw 34 missed calls, though petrified, she couldn’t help but pick up the call.
