The music thumped through the house, a steady beat that made Lila’s chest tighten with excitement and nerves. She had been looking forward to the party all week, replaying Kaden’s unexpected invitation in her mind over and over.
When she entered the living room, the crowd parted slightly, and she spotted him immediately — Kaden, leaning casually against the bar counter, drink in hand, hair slightly tousled, that same playful smirk tugging at his lips. He saw her and his eyes lit up.
“You came,” he said, weaving through the guests toward her. His voice was warm, yet teasing, making her pulse quicken.
“I wouldn’t miss it,” she said, feeling her fingers curl nervously around the strap of her bag.
They started talking, laughter spilling over from small jokes and playful comments. For the first time, Lila felt herself letting go, enjoying his attention without overthinking. Kaden was… different tonight. He was sweet, attentive, almost like the boy she had imagined him to be in her daydreams.
As the evening progressed, he stayed close, guiding her through the crowd, laughing at her jokes, brushing against her hand occasionally. Lila couldn’t help but feel a flutter — the way he looked at her made her heart skip, and for a moment, she allowed herself to believe that maybe he genuinely liked her.
But then, one of Kaden’s friends appeared beside them, a sly grin on his face.
“Kaden,” he said, nudging him, “isn’t she here for the project?”
Lila froze, her eyes widening. “Project? What project?”
Kaden’s friend raised an eyebrow. “You didn’t tell her?”
“Tell me what?” Lila asked, her voice sharp now. She looked at Kaden, forcing him to meet her gaze. “Kaden! You have some explaining to do right now.”
Kaden blinked, caught off guard. The playful smirk faltered for a moment before he leaned closer, lowering his voice. “Lila… it’s not what you think.”
“Not what I think?!” Lila’s chest tightened, her emotions spinning. “So all the teasing, the flirty comments… it wasn’t… real?”
He sighed, running a hand through his hair, unsure how to explain. “I… okay, it started as a way to get your help with the project. I needed someone reliable, and I thought… well, I thought I could get you to work with me if I was… charming.”
Lila’s heart sank. Her chest felt heavy, disappointment and hurt flooding through her. “So everything tonight, everything you’ve done… it was just a strategy?”
Kaden hesitated, then tried to step closer. “No… I didn’t expect to feel… this way. I didn’t plan to actually like you. But I do — I just…”
“I can’t,” Lila interrupted, shaking her head. Her hands trembled slightly as she turned away. “I can’t believe you played with my feelings like that.”
Before Kaden could say more, the music and the crowd swallowed her up. She felt the cool night air as she stepped outside, needing distance to think, to breathe, to process the betrayal. Her heels clicked sharply against the floor, each step echoing her racing heart.
Kaden watched her leave, his frown deepening. He hadn’t expected her reaction. And standing there, realizing he truly did care for her now, he felt a pang of regret he wasn’t used to.
Tonight, the playful mask had done its job… but it had also uncovered something neither of them had planned.
