The next morning, Lila woke up with a dull ache in her chest. The memory of last night’s revelation at the party played over and over in her mind. Kaden’s words, the teasing smile, the truth about the project — it all collided, leaving her confused, hurt, and… angry. She couldn’t deny that she had been drawn to him, but now she felt foolish for believing any of it had been real.
By the time she arrived at the café for her morning shift, her thoughts were still tangled. She busied herself with preparing drinks, wiping tables, and keeping her mind off Kaden. She told herself that it was just a chapter of life she needed to close.
Then she saw him.
Kaden leaned casually against the counter, his posture slightly tense, eyes fixed on her. He spotted her and immediately stepped closer.
“Morning, Lila,” he said, voice low and careful.
Lila didn’t look up. She kept her focus on the coffee machine, her fingers deliberately moving faster than necessary. Her heart was pounding, but her pride was stronger. She wasn’t going to give him the satisfaction of a response.
“I… I wanted to talk about last night,” he continued, voice urgent, trying to get her attention.
Her shoulders stiffened. She didn’t reply. Not a word. Not even a glance. Every instinct screamed at her to ignore him completely, and that’s exactly what she did.
“You don’t get it, do you?” Kaden said, a hint of frustration creeping in. “I didn’t mean to hurt you…”
Still, Lila moved around him silently, avoiding eye contact. Her heart ached, but she refused to let him see how much. His admission that he had started the flirty behavior just to get her help on the project had shattered her trust.
“I… I didn’t expect to actually like you,” he added, a softer tone now, almost pleading.
Her fingers tightened around a cup, her nails digging into the ceramic. She didn’t answer. She couldn’t. She didn’t want to. His words, no matter how genuine they sounded now, were too little too late.
Kaden stepped closer, lowering his voice. “Please, Lila… give me a chance to make it right. I’ll do whatever it takes.”
Lila finally glanced at him — just a flicker of her eyes met his — but she didn’t speak. Her silence was loud. She wiped a spill off the counter, deliberately moving away from him.
Kaden’s chest tightened, realizing she was serious. Her trust had been broken, and it wasn’t something he could fix with words alone. Not yet.
Standing there, he watched as she focused entirely on her work, her back turned, her expression unreadable. For the first time, he felt the weight of his own actions — the consequences of letting his strategy turn into real feelings.
Tonight, the flirty, playful mask that had worked so well before had backfired. And now, Kaden had to figure out how to win her back, not with words, but with actions.
