EPISODE 2: THE QUITE AFTERNOON

465 Words
The café had finally settled into a quiet rhythm by early afternoon. Sunlight streamed through the tall windows, casting warm patterns on the wooden floors, and the faint smell of coffee lingered in the air. Lila moved gracefully between tables, refilling cups, wiping crumbs, and offering polite smiles to the regulars. The morning rush had passed, leaving only a few students with laptops, an elderly couple sipping tea, and the occasional passerby. She paused at the counter, brushing a stray strand of hair from her face. Today felt… different. She couldn’t explain why. Maybe it was the sunlight, or the soft breeze carrying the scent of flowers from the street outside. A tiny flutter of anticipation tickled her heart. Marcy, her coworker, appeared beside her, holding a stack of menus. “Slow day, huh? Perfect time to breathe,” she said, giving Lila a playful nudge. Lila smiled softly. “Yeah… quiet days are nice sometimes,” she replied, glancing down at the tip jar. Life often felt predictable—wake up, work, eat, sleep—but these quiet moments were small gifts she treasured. Her mind drifted toward her little dreams: maybe she could finally sketch a new drawing, or jot down a poem she’d been thinking about. As she walked past a table of students, she overheard them laughing at something silly. Lila grinned, her chest lightened by their joy. Life had little sparks, fleeting but warm, that made ordinary days feel magical. A young mother with a toddler approached the counter. “Hi, can I get a chocolate muffin and a latte for my little one?” “Of course,” Lila replied, grabbing a muffin and preparing the latte. She handed it over carefully, watching the child peek out from behind his mother’s leg and giggle. Her heart warmed. The afternoon stretched on lazily, filled with the comforting rhythm of café life. Lila chatted with Marcy between orders, sharing stories of quirky customers. Life might have been ordinary, but it was hers, and she liked it that way. As the last few customers left, the bell above the door jingled. Lila looked up, expecting another regular. A young man stepped inside, carrying a worn leather notebook and scanning the café quietly. He glanced briefly at her before settling at a table by the window. Lila’s hands froze for a second. There was something intriguing about him, though she didn’t know why. Her heart fluttered slightly, curiosity rising, but she shook her head with a small smile and returned to tidying up. Deep down, though, she couldn’t help thinking that today’s ordinary afternoon had gained a hint of something new. Something—or someone—was quietly stepping into her world, and she had no idea how much it would change everything.
