CHAPTER 5: DEATH COMING FOR ME

I forced myself to sit up as the door creaked open. Ronan stepped inside, his golden eyes gleaming with something unreadable. He studied me for a moment before clicking his tongue. "Still sulking?" He tilted his head. "I thought Luna's rejects had more fire than this." I clenched my fists but said nothing. His smirk widened. "Ah, so you're not completely broken." I glared at him, forcing steel into my voice. "What do you want?" Ronan crouched in front of me, resting his forearms on his knees. He was too close, his scent overwhelming—wild and untamed. "I want to know something," he said, his voice lower now. "Why did Kael let you go?" My throat tightened. I didn’t answer. Ronan chuckled, shaking his head. "I expected him to fight for you. To rip me apart before letting me take what was his." He leaned in, his gaze sharp. "But he didn’t." I swallowed hard. Ronan smirked. "Tell me,…" His voice dropped, almost teasing. "Did it hurt?" I lifted my chin, refusing to let him see the pain in my eyes. "Why do you care?" His smirk faded, replaced by something more calculating. "Because I don’t understand him." He leaned back on his heels. "Alphas don’t give up their mates. Not unless…" His eyes darkened. "Not unless they’re afraid." I frowned. "Afraid?" Kael wasn’t afraid of me. He hated me. He had called me a disaster. Ronan stood, brushing the dust off his hands. "No matter. Whether he wants you or not…" His golden gaze locked onto mine, something dark swirling behind them. "You're my slave now." My breath caught in my throat. Ronan smirked. "Sleep well, little stray." Then, just like that, he turned and walked out. The door slammed shut, locking me in once more. Back in midnight pack Kael jolted awake, his body drenched in sweat, his breathing ragged. The bond. It had pulsed again. Stronger this time. His wolf prowled inside him, restless, anxious. Something was happening. Kael sat on the edge of his bed, running a hand through his damp hair. His body was tense, his wolf pacing inside him, restless and agitated. The bond still pulsed. It refused to break. No matter how much he tried to shut it out, she was still there lingering in the deepest parts of his mind, like a ghost refusing to fade. Then, the door creaked open. A wave of floral perfume filled the room. Seraphina stepped inside, the sheer fabric of her lingerie clinging to her curves, her golden skin glowing under the moonlight streaming through the window. She moved like liquid silk, slow and deliberate, her hips swaying with every step. Kael inhaled sharply, forcing himself to focus. "She’s here. Not her. Forget her." Seraphina smiled, her voice soft as honey. "Are you okay?" Kael exhaled heavily, rubbing his eyes. "I’m fine." Her gaze flickered over him, searching. She took another step closer, resting a delicate hand on his shoulder. "You’re still thinking about her." A flash of irritation sparked in his chest. He lifted his chin, his expression turning cold. "No." The word came out bluntly, but even as he said it, his jaw tightened. Seraphina smirked. Kael reached out, pulling her closer, pressing his forehead against hers. "I can’t have a rare gem like you and still think about her." Seraphina didn’t pull away, but Kael felt the slight tremor in her body. Outwardly, she looked unbothered, but her lips pressed into a tight line, her lashes fluttering as if trying to blink away the sting. Kael could be ruthless, but he wasn’t a liar. Not to himself. And the truth was, no matter how much he tried, his bond wouldn't let him forget. Kael leaned in, capturing her lips in a desperate kiss. If he could just sink into her warmth, let her erase the torment clawing at his chest... The kiss was soft at first, then deeper, more urgent. Seraphina melted against him, her hands sliding over his chest. But it wasn’t working. The moment his eyes shut, the moment the kiss deepened—his mind betrayed him. Not Seraphina. Her. His fingers twitched against Seraphina’s skin. The warmth of another. The scent of something wilder. His wolf howled inside him, clawing, tearing. Not for Seraphina. Not for the woman in his arms. But for me, the mate he had abandoned. Kael’s entire body tensed, his breathing uneven. "No. No, no, no!" He ripped himself away, his pulse hammering. He stood abruptly, his chest rising and falling with sharp, ragged breaths. Seraphina blinked, stunned by his sudden retreat. "Kael?" Her voice was soft, confused. He ran a hand through his hair, turning away. He needed distance. Needed air. Seraphina climbed onto her knees on the bed, watching him with sharp, knowing eyes. "You’re thinking about her again." Kael clenched his fists. Seraphina exhaled shakily, looking up at him with an expression that made his chest tighten. "I knew it," she whispered. "Seraphina—" She shook her head, offering him a small, sad smile. "I knew it wouldn’t be easy for you. Bonds aren’t something you can just erase, Kael." Her words were soft, gentle, but Kael felt the pain behind them. His wolf snarled inside him, angry at the lie he had just spoken. Seraphina sighed and turned away. "I think I should leave for a while," she said quietly. Kael’s body went rigid. "What?" She turned slightly, her gaze meeting his. "I’m going back to my hometown." Panic shot through Kael. "No." He grabbed her wrist gently, his touch firm but not forceful. "Seraphina, you can't just leave." "Why not?" Her voice wavered, barely holding herself together. "I need space, Kael. This... whatever this is between us, it’s hurting me." Kael exhaled, tightening his grip just slightly. "Who will take care of the injured wolves?" His voice was lower now, more desperate than he intended. Seraphina stilled. He saw the flicker in her eyes—the hesitation. She wanted to leave, but she also wanted to be needed. That was her weakness. Kael took a step closer, lowering his voice. "I need you here, Seraphina." He lifted her chin gently, his thumb grazing her jaw. "You're the only one I love. No one else can take that from you." Seraphina inhaled sharply. Her heart stuttered at his words, but Kael felt the lie pressing down on him. His wolf growled in protest. The bond still tethered him to her. And no matter how much he tried to deny it, Seraphina would never truly be the one his soul called for. Seraphina closed her eyes, swallowing her pain. "Alright," she whispered. "I’ll stay." Back in my cave, I lay motionless, staring at the ceiling. Then, at around 2:00 AM, the door creaked open. A fierce rogue she-wolf was thrown inside. She hit the ground, snarling, her amber eyes flashing with fury. The door slammed shut, trapping us both. She turned her head, her glare locking onto me. Then, she howled, moving slowly to my direction. My breath caught. Was this death coming for me?
