Chapter 5 – Ghost POV: First Danger
I should have left.
That thought flashed through my head as I scanned the edge of Sky’s property. I should have pulled back, waited until she was safely inside, and then gone. But I couldn’t. Not when the hairs on the back of my neck were standing on end. Something wasn’t right.
I’d trained for this—thousands of hours, countless missions—but there was something different about Sky. I couldn’t let her out of my sight. Not tonight.
I crouched behind the tree line, binoculars trained on the darkened forest beyond her fence. Shadows moved. Subtle. Calculated. Predatory. And they were coming closer.
I cursed under my breath. Amateur mistakes, or something more? Didn’t matter. I had to act.
I signaled to my comms. “Team, eyes on target. Possible intruder. Stand by for intervention.”
The forest was silent, but my instincts screamed danger. Then I saw him—a figure moving through the trees, careful, methodical, but not careful enough. He had a gun.
I clenched my fists. My body responded automatically. My SEAL training took over. There was no hesitation. No emotion—yet.
I stepped out of the tree line, low and silent, shadow merging with shadow. Sky’s house was behind me. She was safe… for now.
“Stay inside,” I muttered into my earpiece. “Do not come out.”
She peeked through the window, eyes wide, heart hammering. I nodded subtly. Trust me.
The intruder was closer now, following a path to her property line. I moved fast, silent as a shadow, intercepting him before he got any closer.
“Stop,” I growled, my hand resting on my sidearm.
He froze. Good. That gave me the upper hand. But he wasn’t alone. I sensed it immediately—the movement behind him, subtle, calculated. A second threat.
I swore. Time to get hands-on.
I moved in, rapid, precise, disabling the first man with a swift strike that left him unconscious before he even knew what hit him. The second one didn’t wait—he fired.
Instinct, reflex, adrenaline. I dove, rolling to the side, pulling my weapon. A shot rang out. The bullet barely missed me, embedding in the wooden fence.
Sky screamed from inside, and I cursed again. I had to end this fast. No time for hesitation.
I tackled the second man to the ground, hand over his mouth, twisting his arm into a lock that would make him scream if he dared move. “Do not move,” I growled.
He froze. Good. I could handle him. I always handled them.
“Ghost!” Sky’s voice cut through the night, sharp, panicked.
I looked up. She was running toward the door, but I blocked her path, gently but firmly, forcing her to duck behind me. “Inside! Now!”
She hesitated, but I could see the fear in her eyes. Fear… and something else. Desire. That same fire from before, blazing even as she tried to act cautious.
I swept the intruders quickly, neutralized both, and dragged them out of the yard, tying them up with zip cuffs I always carried. No trace of hesitation, no mistakes. Clean. Efficient. Deadly.
I turned back to her, chest heaving, adrenaline still pumping. She was staring at me, eyes wide, lips slightly parted, a mixture of fear and something else I couldn’t name.
“You’re… you’re insane,” she whispered.
I smirked, catching her wrist gently. “Not insane. Protective.”
Her chest heaved as she stared up at me. I saw it—the look. The one I’d been craving since the first night we met. Desire. Trust. Heat. And maybe… relief that I was here.
I stepped closer, brushing a strand of hair from her face. “Sky,” I said, low, dangerous, intimate. “You okay?”
She nodded, trembling slightly. “Yeah… thanks to you.”
I smiled faintly, letting my hand linger on her cheek. “That’s my job.”
Her lips parted, and I could feel the pull between us. The unspoken tension, the fire building again. I wanted her. Needed her. And she wanted me too, I could see it in her eyes.
Without hesitation, I pressed my lips to hers again, more urgently this time. My hands slid around her waist, pulling her flush against me. Her fingers dug into my shoulders, nails grazing skin, and I groaned low in my throat.
“Ghost…” she whispered, breathless, trembling.
“I’ve got you,” I murmured against her lips, voice rough. “No one touches you. Not tonight. Not ever.”
Her arms wrapped around my neck, pulling me closer, and I let the heat between us ignite fully. Our bodies pressed together, hearts racing, breaths mingling. This wasn’t just passion—it was protection, trust, desire, everything tangled together.
And as I lifted her slightly, pressing her against the doorframe, I knew one thing for certain: I wasn’t letting her go. Not now, not ever.
