Chapter 9: Pole Dancing

708 Words
In the days after seeing Zhong Chu, Lin Yixun had worried. For one thing, she feared Young Master Tang would come after her later over what had happened that night. More than anything, though, she feared Zhong Chu would tell Leng Yixiu he had seen her. When they divorced, Leng Yixiu had threatened to make sure there was nowhere in City A she could make a living. He had kept his word. Not a single company had dared employ her. She had not even been able to find work waiting tables or washing dishes. Only then had she finally understood just how “capable” her ex-husband was. If he wanted to destroy someone, he needed only lift a finger. She had no doubt that if Leng Yixiu wished, his reach could extend as far as City T and leave her with no place there either. Unexpectedly, none of her fears came to pass. When Young Master Tang saw her, he even abandoned his former arrogance and bowed and scraped before her. Leng Yixiu did not come looking for her, either. She could not help mocking herself. Who did she think she was? After so many years, Leng Yixiu had probably forgotten all about her. Why would he go to so much trouble just to deal with her? Time slipped away. Before she knew it, the quarter was drawing to a close again, and the lease on their apartment was about to expire. It needed renewing. Lin Yixun checked her bank account and did some calculations. After her mother's medical expenses, what remained was just enough to cover this month's rent. But as the time to renew approached, the landlady demanded a rent increase. “Auntie Li, didn't we agree on fifteen hundred a month? Why are you suddenly raising the rent again?” “Xiao Lin, I'm not trying to make things difficult for you, but I have to eat too. The price of every daily necessity keeps going up. If I don't raise the rent, how am I supposed to get by?” “Then… Auntie, could you perhaps make the increase a little smaller? You know my situation. Almost all my wages go toward my mother's treatment. I really can't afford two thousand yuan a month!” “All right, all right. I'll knock off two hundred. Eighteen hundred. I can't go any lower than that.” “Thank you, Auntie! Thank you so much!” After signing the lease and boarding a bus, Lin Yixun felt utterly drained. Rent was rising, prices were rising, and the medical bills were astronomical. More and more, she was realizing how little she could do. When Lin Yixun arrived at Nightfall, she ran into Axing in the changing room. Seeing someone help her limp inside, Lin Yixun hurried over to lend a hand. “What happened?” “I accidentally twisted my ankle coming down the stairs just now. What am I going to do? I'm supposed to dance later!” A server frowned at the badly swollen ankle. “How can you possibly dance like that? Do you want to ruin your foot?” “What else can I do? You know what the manager's temper is like. If I can't find someone to cover for me, he'll skin me alive!” Axing's eyes suddenly lit up when they fell on Lin Yixun. “Yixun, you know how to pole dance, don't you? Could you take my place?” How anyone had discovered Lin Yixun could pole dance was a funny story in itself. At the year-end party, people had plied her with far too much alcohol. Who would have imagined that the usually quiet, introverted Lin Yixun behaved so strangely when drunk? She did not babble, throw a tantrum, or fall fast asleep. She pole danced. And there was no denying that Lin Yixun's pole dancing had a certain allure. “Me?” Lin Yixun's eyes widened in shock, and she hurriedly shook her head. “I can't. I really can't!” “Why not? You're so good at it.” Having finally found a lifeline, Axing was hardly going to let it go. “Yixun, please help me just this once. Please? Pretty please?”
