Chapter Ten: Betrayals Mr Caulfield was out on the streets, visiting his neighbours. The first door he happened to knock on belonged to the local Flood Warden. "The Council's let us down," she said, on her doorstep, then, remembering her manners, she invited him in. They sat down on her leather couch, sipped tea in mugs, and she let the Council have it, both barrels. "They promised," she stormed, "that when the Flood Basin was built on the old racecourse, that it would drain away excess water when the river stared to rise. Get it? No more floods! Has it happened? Has it Buxton!" Caulfield nodded, not following the words, but picking up the gist. She was disappointed the flood prevention plan wasn't working. That was odd, he agreed.
