EPISODE 7: “THE PRICE OF GLANCES”

1465 Words
“THE PRICE OF GLANCES” The academy felt different now. Not louder. Not busier. Heavier. Like something invisible had settled over Kingsworth and refused to lift. People weren’t just talking anymore. They were watching. Every hallway conversation had edges. Every laugh felt timed. Every glance carried meaning it didn’t used to have. And at the center of it all was Stella Reynolds. She could feel it the moment she stepped into the corridor. Not because anyone said her name. But because they didn’t have to. Eyes followed her. Whispers bent around her movement. She adjusted her bag strap and kept walking. Sophia walked beside her, unusually quiet again. That silence had become more frequent lately. Stella noticed everything, even when she pretended she didn’t. “You’re doing it again,” Stella said softly. Sophia didn’t look at her. “Doing what?” “The thinking-too-loud thing.” Sophia let out a short breath that wasn’t quite a laugh. “That’s not a thing.” “It is for you.” That earned a glance. But Sophia didn’t respond properly. Not because she was angry. Because she wasn’t sure what she was feeling yet. That was becoming a pattern. They reached their lockers. That was when Stella saw him. Jayden. Leaning against the corridor wall like he owned the air around him. Except today, he didn’t look like he owned anything. Not fully. He pushed off the wall immediately when he saw her. Stella slowed slightly without meaning to. Sophia noticed. Of course she did. Jayden stopped in front of them. But he only looked at Stella. “Sophia,” he said briefly. Sophia blinked. “What?” “Give us a minute.” That should have sounded arrogant. It didn’t. It sounded serious. Sophia hesitated. Then looked at Stella. Stella gave a small nod. Sophia walked away slowly, glancing back once. Too many thoughts already forming. Jayden waited until she was gone. Then spoke. “I don’t like what’s happening.” Stella raised an eyebrow. “That’s very specific.” “You know what I mean.” “I actually don’t.” A pause. Jayden exhaled. “The rumors. The post. The way people are looking at you.” Stella crossed her arms. “I’ve been looked at my whole life, Jayden.” “That’s not the same.” “How is it not?” “Because this one is attached to me.” That landed differently. Silence stretched between them. Stella studied him. Not the usual calm observation. Something sharper now. “You think you’re the reason people are talking about me?” Jayden didn’t answer immediately. Which was his answer. Stella shook her head slightly. “That’s not how this works.” “Then how does it work?” She stepped closer just slightly. “People talk because they want stories. Not because you give them truth.” Jayden didn’t like that answer. Because it made him powerless. And Jayden hated being powerless. Then he said something quieter. “I asked you for a reason.” Stella’s expression changed slightly. “What reason?” “I wanted you to be the one I choose when I stop pretending I don’t care.” That sentence sat in the air longer than it should have. Stella didn’t respond immediately. For once, she didn’t have a clean reply. Because that wasn’t flirtation. It wasn’t arrogance. It wasn’t a game line. It sounded real. And that was unfamiliar coming from him. Before she could respond— A voice cut in. “Interesting timing.” Lucas Sterling. Standing behind them like he had always been there. He wasn’t smiling. Not fully. Just observing. Jayden turned immediately. “What do you want?” Lucas tilted his head slightly. “I’m just appreciating structure.” Stella frowned. “Structure?” Lucas looked at her. Then at Jayden. “Cause and effect.” A pause. “Action and reaction.” Another pause. “You two are becoming very predictable.” Jayden stepped forward slightly. “Stay out of this.” Lucas nodded slowly. “That’s the problem.” “What is?” “You think it’s just this.” Lucas gestured vaguely between them. “It isn’t.” Stella’s voice sharpened slightly. “What are you talking about?” Lucas smiled faintly. “I’m talking about what happens when people start believing a story before it’s finished.” Then he walked past them. Like he hadn’t just rearranged something important. Jayden watched him go. Then looked back at Stella. But the moment was gone. Something had shifted. And neither of them knew what had just been planted. ⸻ Across campus, Daniel was walking with Sophia. Not planned. It just happened. She didn’t avoid him. And he didn’t push her. That made it worse. Because silence between them wasn’t uncomfortable. It was thoughtful. Sophia finally spoke. “Do you think people can decide who they are?” Daniel glanced at her. “What do you mean?” “I mean… if everyone keeps seeing you a certain way… do you eventually become it?” Daniel shook his head slowly. “No.” “Why not?” “Because people are wrong a lot.” That made her smile slightly. Not fully. Just enough to exist. “But what if they’re all wrong in the same direction?” Daniel stopped walking for a second. Then said quietly. “Then you stay steady until you remember who you are.” Sophia didn’t respond immediately. But she looked at him differently after that. Like she was noticing something she had missed before. ⸻ Meanwhile, Vanessa was watching Zara from across the athletic field. Zara was training alone. Focused. Strong. Frustrated. Vanessa didn’t approach immediately. She rarely did. She waited until Zara noticed her presence. Which she did. Of course she did. Zara stopped. “You always just watch people like that?” Vanessa shrugged slightly. “It works.” “For what?” “Understanding.” Zara wiped sweat from her forehead. “That sounds creepy.” “It is.” That honesty made Zara pause. Then she laughed slightly despite herself. “You’re weird.” “You’re observant.” “That wasn’t a compliment.” “I know.” Silence. Not hostile. Not friendly. Something in between. Zara finally spoke. “You didn’t show up just to watch me train.” Vanessa tilted her head. “No.” “Then why?” A pause. Then Vanessa said something unexpected. “Because you don’t lie when you’re tired.” Zara frowned slightly. “That doesn’t make sense.” “It does if you pay attention.” And just like that, Vanessa walked away again. Leaving Zara more confused than before. And strangely… Thinking about it longer than she wanted to. That evening, Ethan was gone again. Not physically missing. Emotionally absent. He sat alone in a far corner of the library. Head down. Phone off. World muted. Stella saw him again. She hesitated. Then walked over. “You’re always here,” she said softly. Ethan looked up slowly. “…You notice that?” “I notice things.” A pause. He almost smiled. Almost. “I’m fine,” he said automatically. Stella didn’t believe him. But she didn’t push. Instead, she said: “You don’t have to be fine all the time.” That landed somewhere deep. But Ethan didn’t respond. Not yet. Still processing the idea that someone had noticed him at all. ⸻ Night fell again over Kingsworth. But sleep didn’t settle properly. Because that night, another message spread across campus. Not from Lucas. Not directly. But from the system he had already infected. A new rumor. Short. Simple. Dangerous. “Jayden didn’t ask Stella first.” Just that. But it implied everything. That there had been someone else. That there was hesitation. That something had been interrupted. And suddenly… Stella wasn’t just “the girl Jayden asked.” She was “the second choice that never got finalized.” Jayden read it in his dorm. Then stood still. Long enough for anger to become something colder. Understanding. Lucas wasn’t trying to embarrass him. He was trying to define him. And once people are defined… They stop being unpredictable. Jayden picked up his jacket. And walked out. Not to argue. Not to explain. But to find Lucas Sterling. For the first time. Not as a competitor. But as a threat. ⸻ Somewhere across campus, Lucas stood at the edge of the rooftop. Wind moving slightly through his shirt. Phone in hand. He didn’t turn when he heard footsteps approaching. He already knew. Jayden Knight had finally stopped reacting. And started moving. Lucas smiled faintly. Not fear. Not concern. Interest. Because now… The game was finally becoming real. ⸻ END OF EPISODE 7
