“Think of something!” Company Commander Xu turned around and shouted fiercely at me, “If you don’t come up with something, I’ll send your platoon up!” Everyone’s eyes turned to me… Everyone knew what this meant. Being sent up seemed to have only one outcome: total annihilation under enemy machine gun fire! Such a sacrifice seemed meaningless; besides wasting a few machine gun bullets on the Japanese, we would gain nothing.
