I have been counting the days until it finally came, I arrived in a cab at the gates and was led into the west wing of the estate.
The videos and pictures I saw was nothing compared to its magnificence, it definitely deserved the name Fortress.
So this was where she stayed, now I understand why she had to fight so hard to get rid of me.
Who wouldn’t want all these.
While I rotted in a hospital for five years, she was leaving her best life here.
It made me so mad that I had to bite my lips to hold all my anger in.
A staff led me through the doors before stopping in front of a spacious room, the living room to be precise.
“Mrs Lawson is waiting.” She said and then left me. I nodded and pushed the door open.
There she was, seated on the couch, in a blue silk dress, her hand resting on the head of the couch while she crossed her legs.
I immediately spotted a tattoo on her left thigh, I didn’t have the time to read it as I walked towards her.
She looked exactly the same, infact even better, I doubt she would ever recognize me, afterall we have met once and she didn’t get a chance to see my face then.
“Hello Ma’am” I greeted, I hated that I had to bow my head to her, afterall she did to me, that should be the last thing I ever do, but here we are.
“Miss Adele,” she said, motioning toward a chair.
I sat down while she picked up my file and started reading through it. She scanned through every damn page, with different expressions on her face, it was an attempt to make me feel scared.
But that wasn’t the emotion I was feeling right, I was enraged.
Her brows then lifted, “Hm.” She stopped at a particular page.
“The mayor gave you a five-star review.” She remarked and I nodded.
It was the only thing I requested from them as I left.
I already knew it would be hard to get hired here by myself, but if I had a review from someone as spectacular as them then she was bound to let her guard down.
She looked at it impressed, “He speaks very highly of you.” She adds.
She continued reading before finally placing the file on the table.
“I do have a few questions.” She stated,
“Of course ma’am.” I responded, this is where things get serious.
She leaned back slightly into the couch,“Why do you want to work as a maid?”
“To make money.” I answered, I had already pictured the question from a mile away. “I hope to start a business someday.” I continued.
She smiled, “That’s good” she tapped her fingers against her thighs.
“What about your family?” She inquired.
I froze, I know I had expected that too, but it felt so cruel for her to ask that of me.
“They’re all dead.” I replied, trying my best to stay poised.
“That’s a good thing” she utters as she shrug her shoulders, “Take my advice, families are nothing but troubles. At least this way, you won’t have to worry about anyone else but yourself.” She remarked.
Ironic isn’t it.
The very person who made me lose everyone dear to me was suddenly giving me advice.
“I’ll remember that.” I said sternly.
“Are you in a relationship?” She continued,
“No.”
“No boyfriend?”
“No.” I shook my head,
“Why?” She demanded.
“I don’t like distractions.” I muttered.
She ran a finger behind her ears,
“Being a maid isn’t that much work.” She stated as she judged me.
“Well, you would find your stay here very comfortable, you would mostly be attending to me. My husband barely notices the staff.” She lets out.
Then she laughs a bit, “You know, you remind me of him.”
“Really?”
“Yes.” She nodded.
“You seem soft-hearted like him, don’t want any distractions, you should see him when he is working, he is like a machine. He doesn’t stop unless he is done with what he is doing”
Was she really complaining about him or she was just bragging?
Well I certainly don’t believe things until I have seen them.
Eventually, she reached for the final page, which held the contract.
This was it, this was the moment I have been waiting for.
Just a signature and I will tear down everything she had ever built, I will break her into pieces until she is shivering and begging for me to spare her.
It just takes one tiny signature to do that.
She picked up her pen, the tip hovered over the paper, just a little bit more and she would sign it.
But then she stopped, She stared at document for a couple more seconds, as if she could see my hidden agenda written on it.
I could feel my heart beating so fast, I never thought of a plan b because I believed I won’t fail.
Right now, I was really questioning if I would even succeed.
“I’m pleased with your resume, I really am.” She voiced out.
Then sign the f*****g paper.
“I’m just having second thoughts” she adds.
Was she toying with me right now?
“Is there any other questions you have for me to clarify?”
“Not really” she slowly shook her head.
“It’s just this feeling” she expressed.
She tapped the pen lightly on the paper, Fear biting away at every inch of my body.
She looked up and studied my face carefully, I tried my possible best to stay calm in front of her.
“Hmm” she sucked her teeth.
Every second felt like torture.
I sat quietly, trying not to reveal how desperate I was. Meanwhile, my heart threatened to burst through my chest.
Come on,
Sign it.
Sign the damn paper, sign your f*****g death warrant.
She stared at the contract one last time, the pen hovering directly above the signature line.
And all I could do was sit there anxiously, wondering if the woman who ruined my life was about to unknowingly open the door for me to ruin hers.
