Memories are created whether we liked the idea behind them or not.
It might be part of us, but I didn't believe we, living creatures, have control over the occurrence of events that later become our memories, just like we couldn't control the sequence of our day-to-day activities.
We might have control to some extent, but some things are just beyond living creatures' knowledge. For instance, why would I brush my lips with Alpha Jace if I could control that from happening?
Before yesterday, I had bad and unfriendly memories of the Alpha I was destined to be with, but what happened yesterday changed that. His condition, the sweet and intoxicating tingles that I felt when I touched him for the first time, and definitely the sweet but short kiss that we sort of shared.
