ALPHA JACE SLAVO
Where has she disappeared to?
The face that stared back at I wasn’t that of Ariana. It was Alison’s witch face, and her eyes were clouded, which meant she was in some spiritual trance. It wasn't evident because she always performed her spiritual activity behind closed doors.
No wonder I couldn't connect to her through the mindlink. But why was Alison in a trance? And where the hell was Ariana?
“Lev, can you sense Ariana anywhere? She couldn’t have gone far.”
I asked my wolf for help because Alison was as good as useless whenever she slipped into a trance. The only thing on her mind was who or what she was in the spell for. My wolf was quiet for a while before he told me that all he could smell around us was smoke.
“Try again, Lev. You have better chances than I do.”
My statement was cut off by Alison when she gasped suddenly. Her ugly deformed witch face began to change back into her pretty face. It was evident that she was coming out of her spiritual trance.
She was right on time. I needed her. Now.
“Alpha…” Alison whispered in a strange eerie voice, blinking rapidly and holding me for support. Her fingers touched my scars, and I didn't fling because it was her.
“What happened, Alison? How could everything occur so fast? I'm lost at the moment.”
I couldn't wait for the witch to fully recover from her daze before bombarding her with questions. I needed to find Ariana before she slipped through my fingers. I had come too far to start all over.
“A-Alpha, where’s Ariana? We have to find her. Something bad is moving toward us.”
Alison warned. I was supposed to ask her where Ariana was, but she beat me. If Alison didn't know where my mate was, why was she in a trance?
“You have better chances of finding her if you use your magic. What do you mean by something bad? What did you see?”
I voiced too fast. Something was wrong, and even though I couldn't figure out what was wrong, I could feel it, and it came off like Alison knew more about what was dark to me. Humans rushed past Alison and me in the passageway, evacuating the building as they were told, but I didn't know if I should leave or stay.
Leaving would have been the best option if I was sure that my fated mate was outside and safe. Probably struggling to escape from me.
Staying was dangerous because I wasn't immune to fire, but Ariana might still be within this building, and I needed to find her. Leaving without her was equivalent to accepting that I might never have the heir I had been laboring to get for the sake of my pack’s future.
“I can't use my power anymore as long as we are in the human community.”
Alison broke the worst news ever to me. Now there were no doubts that something was wrong. No offense to Alison, but she was a burden if her powers couldn't be used while we were in the human world.
“What do you mean you can’t use your powers?” I asked Alison for clarification. I was tense and anxious, which was unlike me.
“We were being tracked.”
“Call in the ambulance! We found a body in one of the exclusive suites!” Someone barked orders at some men that rushed out, taking into a device they were holding. Alison’s clarification was overlooked when my brain finally registered what my ears heard.
I stayed in an exclusive suite, and Ariana was there before she disappeared. What if she was still in the suite when I assumed she was Alison? What if she was the victim?
“Why are you still standing there when our mate might be in danger? Seems you don't want a son after all.”
Lev's gruff voice was enough to get me running back toward the suite that was supposed to be mine for the next few days. I had to push through some men before I could reach the entrance of my suite, and that was when I saw her body lying on a stretcher.
Oh no! What have I done?
“The question is, what will you do now? I warned you, didn't I but you never listen to anyone but your pretty petite witch anyway.”
My wolf sounded furious, and even though I didn’t know why he thought it was my fault that our fated half-human was trapped in the suites, I didn't try to wash clean of Lev’s accusations.
“You can't come in here, sir. Please stay outside!” One of the fire extinguishing officers shouted when I attempted to enter my suite. I ignored him, much to his displeasure.
“What happened to her? Is she dead?” I questioned, crouching down to pick up the sound of Ariana’s heart, hoping that my only hope hadn’t been crushed because of my fated mate's stupidity. Why would she start a fire without thinking about exiting the building?
Was she trying to kill herself because of the shock of seeing me shift into Lev and back? No, that couldn't be it.
Ariana might be a weak half-bride, but she wasn't a quitter. She was a fighter. She was a weak fighter, but she couldn't have thought of committing suicide just to escape me.
“Are you her family? Oh, I saw you leaving earlier, and I remember asking if anyone was inside here with you.”
“Where did you find her!” I barked at the man spewing unnecessary words at me.
I needed to understand what happened right under my nose. It didn't make sense that Ariana was lying on the stretcher when I believed that she had started the fire. She could have escaped if Alison and I got out without a scratch.
“She was stuck in the bathroom close to the fire, so we couldn't get her out until the fire quenched,”
The man explained, eying me with suspicion as I tried to figure things out. Ariana didn't start the fire, but who did?
It wasn't me, and Alison told me it was Ariana before she slipped into her spiritual trance, but I was sure it wasn't Alison. She couldn't hurt a fly.
“Can you focus on the dying girl!” My wolf boomed angrily in my head, and I chose that moment to block him off my mind. He wasn't helping even though he was right.
Ariana was what I should focus on, and with a witch beside me, I knew she would be healed in a twinkle of an eye.
“I need you, Alison. Where are you?” I called for Alison, and she responded swiftly, telling me she was trying to search for Ariana in some other part of the hotel, but she hadn't been able to feel her.
“She’s right here with me, but she's dying. Get here as soon as you can.”
I ordered, and Alison acknowledged my words. The plan was to have Alison heal my mate and rest somewhere safe for the rest of the night before we began the journey back to the dark lands.
But the plan got ruined when the alerted medical agent arrived before Alison. All my effort to stop them from wheeling Ariana away was fruitless. I didn't want to show my strength to the human. That action would alert the hunters, and they would storm into this hotel within minutes.
Hunters were always watching even though they might seem like normal humans, which they once were before they evolved.
“You can't take her away!”
I growled at the medical practitioners, but one of them responded sweetly instead of reacting out of anger for the way I addressed them.
“Put your mind to rest that we will try everything to ensure your girlfriend is alright. It might take a while, but I promise she will be fine. So relax.”
The sweet nurse told me I had to hold myself back from yelling and shifting right before them. They disobeyed an Alpha, and I hated it more than being in the human world. And if she just called Ariana my girlfriend? Hilarious!
“Breathe, Alpha. You don't want to attack anyone.” Alison chipped to me through the mindlink as she appeared beside me.
It was a relief that my witch was here because she could do her thing and save Ariana before my hope sunk along with her life.
I expected Alison to wave her fingers and chant some spells, but she didn't do any of that. Instead, she stood beside me and watched as Ariana was taken away.
“What are you waiting for? Do something if you don't want me to?”
I ordered, but to be sincere, I couldn't do anything than destroy the place and create havoc because I couldn't heal Ariana. I had the healing abilities once, but it was all gone now due to reasons I didn't want to think about.
“I can't use my powers unless we are ready to go home, and Ariana might die before we reach Dark Moonlight if the humans don’t treat her. Alison revealed, reminding me of what he had told me in the hallway earlier.
“Why can't you use your powers? Heal her, and then we go home before the hunters arrive. They won't be able to track us down if you are fast about it.” I pointed out to the witch. She was getting on my nerves with her constant refusal, but I believed Alison had a tangible reason.
“They tracked us down already, Alpha!” Alison announced through the mindlink.
“What? When?” I asked her.
“The hunters were here when the fire started. They sense my magic, and they probably sensed you when you shifted earlier. It was hard to knock them off their tracks when I was in a trance, and I'm sure they will realize they were tricked soon.” Alison responded.
I thought about the worst that could happen if Alison healed my fated mate and if she didn't. Either way, the hunters would soon be back.
They would either realize that Alison had tricked them and returned with reinforcement or sense Alison's magic if she tried to heal Ariana and still produced with backup.
“I'll handle the hunters. Heal her!” I concluded, voicing my thoughts to Alison. It was either now or never. Face the hunters or lose Ariana to death and still face the hunters.
“You can't face them, Alpha, not with your injury, and I can't heal Ariana when the humans are around,” Alison argued with genuine concern.
“Make the humans sleep or something but heal Ariana and let's go home after,” I added, using my Alpha tone and authority. I was tired of Alison’s arguments despite coming from a good place.
“But, Alpha, making them sleep would require much of my power which will pull the hunters here sooner,” Alison explained thoughtfully, pushing me beyond the limit of my control.
“Do it, Alison! Dammit!” I barked loudly, attracting the humans and forcing my pack to do what I thought was right even though everything might go wrong.
“As you wish, Alpha Jace.” Alison concurred, walking towards the stretch and doing her thing with the humans.
