The First Surprise

What. The. Absolute. Fuck....

    He already knows! Aus... what? Why? How? I look at Austyn, straight in to his face. Hes holding my face, looking back at me. I sigh then say, "I don't know what to say. I can't talk to you right now." I pull my face away from his hands and walk away. I just don't know how to feel. I can feel Austyn staring at me as I walk away from him. "Mercedes...." his voice trails off as I enter our first period. I don't want to be here. I want Luke. I want to be alone. I don't know what I want. I spend the rest of class distracted. I feel betrayed and confused.

    Mrs. Van catches me before I leave class, "Mercedes, come here please. I need to speak to you for a minute." I approach her desk and look at her. She smiles at me then says, "Mercedes please don't be upset with him. He was in a difficult situation. My husband and I went through the same thing. He knew before I did. How was he supposed to tell you dear? That isn't exactly a conversation to have over dinner." She stands up and touches my arm and continues speaking, "Be patient, in time this will all make sense. Now get going. Go find your Intended Other, but don't be late for next period." I don't say anything to her. I just nod and leave.

   The next few classes drag by, slowly. I can't wait for lunch. I'm hungry and I want to see Luke. I need him right now. Luckily my thoughts distract me long enough until the lunch bell rings. Just avoid him." I snatch my hand away from him and remember Cami telling me the same thing earlier. "Why do I need to be careful? Why is everyone telling me that! Why?" As I finish talking I realize how loud I'm being. I look around then back at Mike. He looks angry and says, "He forced a girl. Last year. He got away with it to. She was my girlfriend." I have a quick flashback to what happened in the hallway, I touch Mike's arm, by the look on his face I could tell it calmed him down immediately. I give him a half smile and say, "Thank you for telling me. I appreciate you for that." He smiles and is about to say something but my phone rings, its Luke. 

    I answer my phone, "Hey baby where are you." He says. I look at Mike and decide not to tell Luke what he said over the phone, instead I say "I'm almost to the lunch room. I gotta go babe." I don't give him a chance to respond, I hang up. Mike offers to walk with me to the lunch room. I let him, we are both going to the same place, it couldn't hurt. We talk to each other but its just small talk. He actually seems decent. We go our separate ways at the entrance of the lunch room. Shortly after I find Luke and the guys. Austyn stares at me, he's not even trying to be discreet. I tune out the conversation in the lunch room. I focus on Luke's voice then look at him. I smile at him and he sees it. He stops talking and gives me that perfect pretty boy smile, "Whats up babe?" He leans over and gives me a quick kiss. He gets closer and whispers in my ear, "I want to take you somewhere baby. Meet me at my car before final period." I smile again and nod.

I look at it wondering why but I don't think much about it. I wonder if Austyn is still looking so I look at him, I guess he stopped looking.
