Chapter 3

My phone buzzed. Lillian had posted on i********:: Some people get all worked up over a little joke. Can't take a hint. Underneath was a photo that'd been shared like crazy. In the picture, my face was turned to the side, caught mid-expression with shock and anger I couldn't hide in time. The word "LOSER" in big blue letters across my forehead was sharp and impossible to miss. My hair was a mess. My makeup was smeared. I looked pathetic. I stormed over and slapped Lillian right across the face. "Why the hell did you send that photo? You are such a bitch." Samuel shoved me off, and I hit the wall hard. Then he planted himself in front of Lillian, like I was the threat. "She was just having fun. She really didn't mean any harm." Lillian leaned into him, her fingers tracing lazy circles on his chest. "Just let her go. There are plenty of pretty women in Crestwood City. Besides, you've got me." Samuel didn't argue with her. He just looked at me. "I think you need to cool off, Charlotte." The second that door closed in my face, I shut the door on Samuel in my heart. He knew exactly how wrecked I was. He knew how humiliating this was. And still, he chose to let me leave. If he'd said even one word to make me stay, maybe I wouldn't have gone. That night, I checked into a hotel. Didn't sleep a wink. The next morning, my phone was blowing up. Samuel's friends were all piling on me. A: Samuel loves you so much, and you just walk out on him? B: Don't be stupid, Charlotte. You're gonna regret this. C: Everyone was having a good time, and you had to ruin it. I didn't reply to a single one. People only ever saw Samuel being sweet to me. They never saw the times he let me get humiliated. First proposal, Samuel had the ring out, trying to hold my attention, and Lillian pushed me into the pool. I ended up with a cold, stuck in bed. Second proposal, Lillian used Samuel's phone to send me a fake proposal text, so I showed up looking desperate in front of everyone. And Lillian's i********: kept updating. Samuel took her beach biking. Stargazing at the observatory. Drive-in movies. Every photo made them look like a happy couple, like they were in love. He never wanted to spend time doing stuff like that with me. He always said it was childish. But now I knew. He just didn't have fun with me. Samuel sent a message. Samuel: Don't overthink it. I'm just taking Lillian out to clear her head. Come back when you've calmed down. Then I got a DM from Lillian. Lillian: Yeah, I did it on purpose. I just can't stand seeing a dumb b***h like you happy. I called my men in Crestwood City. "Bring me Lillian Smith. And get me one of those markers that doesn't wipe off." An hour later, Lillian was brought in front of me. "You crazy b***h! How dare you kidnap me!" I slowly sat up from the couch and looked at her. "My name isn't Charlotte Lewis." She blinked, not getting why I was saying that. "My name is Charlotte Lane. My father is one of the most feared mafia bosses on the East Coast. "That means everything you did to me, I'm gonna give right back." I paused and watched the color drain from Lillian's face. "I'm sure you know what the mafia is capable of." Lillian's lips started trembling. Of course she knew. On the East Coast, the Lane family was on a level regular people couldn't even dream of. I gave my men a nod. One of them picked up the marker, and the first "LOSER" landed right on Lillian's forehead. Lillian screamed. Then more words landed on her arms, her neck, her legs. She begged. She shrieked. Finally, she just crumpled to the floor, covered in those ugly words. I smiled, my tone light. "Compared to all your little jokes over the years, I've been real generous. Oh, and forgot to mention, these markers don't wipe off. They're gonna stick with you for a while. Just a little joke, Lillian. You're not gonna get mad, are you?"
