Chapter 12: Under the Spotlight

Lena woke before her alarm. For several seconds, she lay completely still, staring at the ceiling and listening to the quiet hum of the hotel room. Then she remembered. The showcase. Today. Her stomach immediately filled with nervous butterflies. She sat up and looked toward the closet. Her performance outfit was hanging neatly from the door, ready for the evening. Her guitar case rested beside it. Her notebook sat on the desk. Everything was prepared. Everything except her nerves. “Oh, boy,” she whispered. She reached for her phone. There was one message waiting. From Noah. Good morning. Today is the day. Lena smiled. She typed: Please don’t remind me. I’m trying to pretend it’s not happening. His response appeared almost instantly. Too late. She laughed softly. I’m nervous. Good. Lena rolled her eyes. You and everyone at the label need a new word. Nervous means you care. She stared at the screen. That was exactly what he’d said before. Then another message arrived. And being nervous doesn’t mean you’re going to fail. Lena’s smile softened. Thanks. A pause. Then: See you tonight. Her heart skipped. See you tonight. She set her phone down. For the first time that morning, she felt ready. Not completely. But enough. ⸻ By noon, Lena was at Horizon Records. The building felt different today. More crowded. More energetic. People hurried through hallways carrying equipment, folders, instruments, and cups of coffee. Technicians checked microphones. Someone adjusted lighting equipment. A keyboard was being wheeled toward the performance room. Lena stood in the middle of it all, trying to remember how to breathe. Vanessa approached with a clipboard. “Ready?” Lena looked at her. “No.” Vanessa laughed. “Good answer.” “Everyone keeps asking me that.” “Because everyone wants to know.” Lena looked around. “How many people are coming?” “Not many.” “How many is not many?” Vanessa hesitated. “Maybe eighty.” Lena’s eyes widened. “Eighty?” “It’s a small showcase.” “That is not small!” Vanessa smiled. “You’ll be fine.” Lena sighed. “There it is again.” ⸻ The rehearsal went well. Better than Lena expected. She performed her first song without trouble. Then she moved into the second. Finally came The One Who Stayed. She stood at the center of the small stage, guitar in hand. The room was mostly empty. Only the staff watched. Still, her hands trembled slightly. She looked toward the empty chairs. One of those seats would belong to Noah tonight. The thought made her heart beat faster. “Whenever you’re ready,” Adrian said from the soundboard. Lena took a breath. Then began. The first verse was quiet. Her voice filled the room naturally. The second verse came easier. By the chorus, she wasn’t thinking about the audience anymore. She was thinking about memories. Noah sitting beside her on the curb. Noah laughing when she forgot lyrics. Noah telling her she could become anything. Noah standing at the bus station. The song ended. Silence. Then Vanessa clapped. “That.” Lena looked at her. “What?” “That is exactly how you need to perform it tonight.” Lena smiled. Maybe she could do this. ⸻ Hours later, the hotel room was filled with the soft sounds of music and Lena pacing back and forth. She checked the time. 6:14 p.m. The showcase started at seven. She had already checked her outfit five times. Her guitar twice. Her phone at least twenty. Finally, she sat down. Her phone buzzed. Noah. Here. Lena froze. Her heart jumped. You’re already here? Just arrived. Are you nervous? His response: A little. She smiled. You? Nervous? I’m watching you perform. Of course I am. Her chest warmed. She typed: Why? The response took longer. Because I know how much this means to you. Lena stared at the screen. Then another message appeared. And because I’m proud of you. She blinked quickly. For some reason, that nearly made her cry. She typed: Thank you. Then: I’ll see you soon. ⸻ The showcase room looked completely different when Lena arrived. The chairs were filled. People spoke quietly among themselves. Executives stood near the back. Producers sat with notebooks. Industry professionals checked schedules. And then Lena saw him. Noah. He was sitting near the middle. The moment their eyes met, his face lit up. Lena smiled. Everything inside her settled. He was here. That was enough. Vanessa touched Lena’s shoulder. “Ready?” Lena nodded. This time, she meant it. ⸻ The lights dimmed. Conversation faded. Lena stepped onto the stage. For one terrifying second, the room seemed enormous. The spotlight was bright enough to make everything beyond it blurry. She couldn’t see everyone’s faces. But she could see Noah. He was watching her. Lena wrapped her fingers around the microphone. “Hi.” Her voice sounded slightly shaky. She smiled. “I’m Lena.” A few people laughed softly, warmly. She continued. “Thank you for being here tonight.” The first song began. Lena sang. At first, nerves controlled every breath. Then the melody took over. Her voice strengthened. The room seemed to disappear. When the first song ended, applause filled the room. Lena smiled. She hadn’t expected the sound to affect her so much. Then came the second song. She performed it with more confidence. And then— The final song. The One Who Stayed. Lena sat on the stool at center stage. Her guitar rested across her lap. She looked toward the audience. Then toward Noah. Their eyes met. He smiled. Lena took a breath. “This last song is about someone very important to me.” Her heart pounded. Someone near the front leaned forward. Lena continued. “Someone who knew me before I knew who I wanted to become.” Noah’s expression changed slightly. She looked down at her guitar. Then played the opening chords. The room became silent. Lena began singing. Her voice was softer than before. More vulnerable. The words flowed naturally. She wasn’t pretending anymore. Every lyric carried a memory. Every chord carried something she’d never managed to say. As the chorus approached, she looked up. Noah was still watching. She sang directly toward him. Not because she wanted everyone to notice. Because for that moment, she needed him to understand. The final verse arrived. Her voice trembled slightly. But she kept going. The final note faded. Silence. For one heartbeat. Two. Then the room erupted in applause. Lena lowered her guitar. Her chest rose and fell quickly. She looked at Noah. He was standing. Clapping. His expression was impossible to read. But his eyes told her enough. He understood. At least partly. ⸻ Backstage, Lena barely had time to breathe before Vanessa hugged her. “That was incredible.” Lena laughed breathlessly. “Really?” “Really.” Adrian walked over. “You owned that stage.” Lena smiled. “I was terrified.” “You couldn’t tell.” Then Vanessa’s expression changed. “There’s someone who wants to meet you.” Lena’s nerves returned. “Who?” Before Vanessa could answer, a man in a dark suit approached. He introduced himself as Richard Bennett, one of Horizon’s senior executives. “I’ve been watching you since the first recording.” Lena shook his hand. “Nice to meet you.” “You have something special.” She’d heard those words before. But this time they felt different. “We’d like to talk about developing you as an artist.” Lena’s heart stopped. Developing. As an artist. This was real. Her dream wasn’t just something she talked about anymore. It was standing in front of her. “Thank you,” she said softly. Richard smiled. “We’ll talk more tomorrow.” Then he walked away. Lena stood frozen. Vanessa smiled. “Congratulations.” Lena looked toward the hallway. “I need a minute.” ⸻ She found Noah outside. He was standing beneath a row of lights near the entrance, waiting. When he saw her, he smiled. “You were amazing.” Lena walked toward him. “Really?” “Really.” She laughed. Then stopped. The moment felt different. Quieter. More important. “You heard the song.” He nodded. “I did.” “And?” He looked at her. “I was right.” “About what?” “That it was about me.” Lena’s heart jumped. She didn’t answer. She didn’t need to. Noah stepped slightly closer. “You could’ve told me.” “I was scared.” “Why?” She looked down. “Because you’re important to me.” He was quiet. Then he said: “You’re important to me too.” Lena looked up. Their eyes met. For a moment, everything else disappeared. No executives. No record label. No city. No audience. Just them. The two kids who had grown up together. The two best friends who had slowly become something neither of them knew how to name. Noah smiled faintly. “You’re still Lena.” She smiled back. “And you’re still Noah.” “Good.” “Good.” They stood there for another moment. Then Noah glanced toward the building. “So…” “So?” “You think you’re ready for whatever happens next?” Lena looked back at the glowing entrance. She thought about the stage. The applause. The song. The opportunity waiting for her tomorrow. Then she looked at Noah. “Yes.” And for the first time, she didn’t feel like she was walking into the future alone. She had no idea what the next chapter would bring. But whatever happened— She knew who she wanted beside her.
