Chapter One: The Man I Was Forbidden to Meet

I was warned never to meet him.

I just didn't know his name.

My grandmother had repeated the same words to me for as long as I could remember.

"Shen Yue, there is one family you must never get involved with."

Whenever I asked why, she would simply look at me with fear in her eyes.

"The Lu family."

I never understood what was so frightening about them.

Until tonight.

The rain had been falling heavily when I arrived at the Lu family's mansion. I stood at the entrance, holding my white dress tightly as the cold wind moved through my hair.

I shouldn't have come.

I knew that.

But my mother had insisted.

"Just attend the dinner, Yue. Don't cause trouble. We need their help."

So I stepped inside.

The moment I entered the hall, something strange happened.

The lights flickered.

Then every candle in the room went out.

I froze.

A cold sensation moved through my body.

And then I heard a voice behind me.

"Who are you?"

I turned around.

He was standing at the top of the staircase.

A man dressed completely in black.

Tall.

Calm.

Powerful.

His eyes were so cold that I immediately forgot how to breathe.

I had never seen him before.

But the moment our eyes met, something inside me whispered one terrifying word.

Run.

I couldn't move.

He slowly walked down the stairs.

His eyes never left mine.

"What's your name?" he asked.

"Shen Yue."

The moment I said my name, his expression changed.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

Fear.

"Who told you to come here?"

"My mother."

He stopped in front of me.

"You shouldn't be here."

I frowned.

"Why?"

He didn't answer.

Instead, he reached for my wrist.

The moment his fingers touched my skin, a bright silver light exploded between us.

Everyone in the room gasped.

I pulled my hand away.

"What was that?"

The man stared at my wrist.

A strange silver symbol had appeared on my skin.

His face became pale.

"No..."

I looked at him.

"What?"

He stepped backward.

For the first time, the cold expression on his face disappeared.

"You have the Moonfire."

I stared at him in confusion.

"The what?"

Before he could answer, the enormous doors behind us slammed shut.

Everyone screamed.

A powerful wind swept through the room.

My white dress began to move as though I were standing in the middle of a storm, even though every window was closed.

Then I heard something.

A growl.

Not from outside.

From him.

I looked up at the man in front of me.

His eyes were no longer completely human.

They had turned silver.

My heart pounded.

"What... are you?"

He looked directly into my eyes.

"My name is Lu Chen."

He paused.

"And if you want to survive tonight, Shen Yue..."

His voice became dangerously low.

"You need to leave this house before midnight."

I swallowed.

"Why?"

He looked toward the dark windows.

"Because they know you're here."

"Who?"

He didn't answer.

Then something crashed against the mansion wall.

BOOM!

The entire building shook.

Lu Chen suddenly grabbed my hand.

"Run."

I didn't understand what was happening.

I didn't know who was coming.

And I certainly didn't know why this strange man seemed to know something about me that even I didn't know.

But as I ran beside him, one thought kept repeating inside my head.

My grandmother warned me about the Lu family.

And somehow...

I knew she had never told me the real reason.
