Freedoms are rights, entitlements, things that people are allowed to do. For a freedom to have value, it must be inalienable, protected. In fact, it needs to be protected from the party that has the most to gain from violating the right.
Freedom of assembly is a right that causes the most concern. It allows contagious ideas to pass unchecked, like a shared cigarette. Assembly provides an exchange of wills to strengthen resolve and cast aside doubt. Last weekend I saw legends of rock ’n’ roll assemble at a hootenanny. The big guns were there.
