Chapter 6: The Door That Shouldn’t Open

726 Words
Kael stopped in front of the silver door. For a moment, neither of them spoke. The markings across the surface glowed faintly beneath Nyra’s hand, cold against her skin. She frowned slightly. “Why does it feel like this thing knows me?” Kael’s gaze stayed on the door. “Because it does.” Nyra looked at him sharply. “That’s not possible.” “You keep saying that.” “That’s because nothing around you makes sense.” A faint pause followed. Then— “Open it,” he said. Nyra blinked once. “You’re serious?” “Yes.” She stared at the door again. Every instinct told her not to touch it again. But somehow… Her hand still moved. The moment her fingers pressed against the silver markings, the light beneath them spread instantly. Bright. Alive. Nyra stepped back immediately. The door began to move on its own. Slowly. The sound echoed low through the hall. Kael didn’t move. Didn’t react. Like he already knew what was coming. Nyra swallowed slightly as darkness revealed itself behind the opening. At first, she couldn’t see anything. Then— A voice. Soft. Low. “Kael.” Nyra’s eyes shifted toward him instantly. Something changed in his expression. Not much. Just enough to notice. Then another voice spoke from inside. “She finally came.” Nyra frowned immediately. “Excuse me?” No answer came. Only footsteps. Slow. Steady. A figure slowly emerged from the darkness. Tall. Pale. Silver eyes locking directly onto Nyra. Not Kael. Her. Nyra straightened slightly without realizing it. The stranger stopped a few steps away. Then smiled faintly. “So it’s really you.” Nyra looked between him and Kael. “Okay, clearly I missed something.” Kael stayed silent. That alone irritated her. The silver-eyed man glanced at Kael briefly before looking back at her again. “You don’t remember anything, do you?” Nyra narrowed her eyes. “Remember what?” No one answered immediately. That silence again. Always silence. Nyra crossed her arms. “Can somebody explain what’s happening for once?” The stranger’s gaze softened slightly. “You were never supposed to come back here.” Nyra blinked. “Come back?” Kael finally moved then. One step forward. “That’s enough.” The silver-eyed man looked at him calmly. “She deserves to know.” “She’s not ready.” Nyra frowned harder. “Stop talking like I’m not standing here.” Neither of them looked away from each other. Tension settled heavily between them. Then the stranger sighed softly. “My name is Lucien,” he said finally. Nyra looked at him carefully. “And?” “And this place knew you before I did.” That made her pause. For a second, her mind went completely blank. Like something tried to surface— Then disappeared again. Nyra stepped back slightly. “That’s impossible.” Lucien tilted his head slightly. “Is it?” “Yes.” Her answer came too fast. Too sharp. Kael noticed. Of course he did. Nyra looked at the silver markings glowing brighter across the walls. Then back at them. “I’ve never been here before.” No one responded immediately. And somehow… That silence felt worse than an answer. Lucien studied her carefully. “You really don’t remember.” Nyra’s chest tightened slightly. “Remember what?” Kael’s voice came low this time. “Nyra.” She looked at him instantly. And something about the way he said her name made her stomach twist slightly. Not fear. Something else. Lucien glanced between both of them quietly before speaking again. “She opened the door herself.” Kael’s jaw tightened slightly. “I can see that.” Lucien looked back at Nyra. “No one else ever could.” Nyra stared at the glowing markings again. Then slowly at her own hand. For some reason… It still felt warm. And suddenly— The door behind Lucien slammed shut on its own. The sound echoed violently through the hall. Nyra flinched immediately. Kael turned sharply toward the door. For the first time since meeting him— His expression changed completely. And that was when Nyra realized something was wrong. she could not shake the feeling off and looked at keal ,her whole body shake as if something dangerous is approaching or worse.
