“Nyra.”
The voice came again from behind the broken door.
For a second, my body completely froze.
Not because it sounded loud.
Because it knew me.
I stared at the crack spreading across the silver door, my heartbeat suddenly uneven. The growling from before had stopped completely, replaced by a silence that somehow felt worse.
Beside me, Lucien’s expression darkened.
Kael didn’t move at all.
That scared me more than the creature.
“What is that thing?” I asked quietly.
Neither of them answered immediately.
And honestly, I was getting tired of that.
The silver markings flickered violently across the walls again. Pieces of the broken seal dropped onto the floor one after another.
Then—
“Nyra.”
This time, the voice sounded closer.
My stomach tightened instantly.
It sounded wrong.
Not human.
Not monster either.
Something in between.
I swallowed slowly before looking at Kael sharply. “Why does it know my name?”
His jaw tightened slightly.
Then finally—
“Because it remembers you.”
For a second, my mind went completely blank.
I stared at him. “What?”
Another crack split across the silver door before he could answer.
The entire hall trembled violently.
Lucien cursed under his breath while stepping back. “The seal is breaking too fast.”
Kael’s eyes never left the door.
“She needs to leave.”
I blinked immediately. “Excuse me?”
Neither of them looked at me.
That annoyed me instantly.
“Can everybody stop deciding things for me?”
Another impact slammed against the door.
Hard enough to shake the floor beneath us.
I flinched automatically.
Then silence again.
Heavy.
Waiting.
My eyes slowly moved back toward the broken door.
Something was standing behind it now.
I couldn’t see clearly through the darkness, but I felt it staring directly at me.
Not Kael.
Not Lucien.
Me.
A cold feeling crawled down my spine.
“Kael,” I said quietly.
For the first time since meeting him—
He looked uncertain.
Not afraid.
But close enough.
That alone made my chest tighten.
Then suddenly, the creature laughed softly from behind the door.
The sound echoed through the hall unnaturally.
“You brought her back.”
Lucien immediately looked toward Kael.
“You said she remembered nothing.”
“I said I wasn’t sure,” Kael replied coldly.
I frowned sharply. “Can somebody explain what’s happening?”
No answer.
Again.
At this point, I honestly wanted to scream.
The creature moved closer behind the broken seal. Long dark claws slowly wrapped around the shattered opening.
“She smells the same,” it murmured.
Every hair on my body stood instantly.
Kael stepped in front of me without hesitation.
The movement caught me off guard.
The creature laughed again.
“There it is,” it whispered. “That obsession.”
Kael’s expression darkened immediately.
“Silence.”
The single word echoed sharply through the hall.
And somehow—
The creature actually stopped talking.
For a second.
Then it laughed again.
Low.
Mocking.
“She still doesn’t know.”
I frowned immediately. “Know what?”
This time, Kael turned toward me.
His expression unreadable again.
Which somehow made everything worse.
Before he could speak—
The silver door shattered completely.
The sound exploded through the hall.
I stumbled backward instantly as darkness poured through the opening like smoke.
Then I saw it properly for the first time.
Tall.
Massive.
Black veins crawling across pale skin.
Silver eyes glowing unnaturally in the dark.
The creature’s gaze landed directly on me.
And smiled.
My breath caught instantly.
Because somehow…
It looked familiar.
