THE LOVE WE COULDN'T HIDE

518 Words
The old woman stepped backward. “No.” Her voice trembled. Her son—Chike's real father—walked toward her. “You've been hiding behind me for twenty years, Mum.” She stared at him. “You don't understand what I've done for this family.” “I understand everything.” He looked at his twin. “And so does he.” The man standing beside the grandmother suddenly pulled a gun. “Everyone down!” The police officers raised their weapons. “Drop it! He smiled. “You think you can arrest me?” Inspector Grace stepped forward. “We already have enough evidence.” She held up the memory card. “The confession, the financial records, and your own recorded conversations.” The man's face changed. “You…” “You should have destroyed the evidence when you had the chance.” He looked at Amara. “This is all because of you.” He raised his gun. Chike jumped in front of Amara. “Don't!” A gunshot rang through the church. Chike fell. “CHIKE!” Amara caught him before he hit the floor. Blood stained her hands. “No, no, no…” Chike looked at her. “I'm okay.” “You're bleeding!” “It's only my shoulder.” Amara cried as she held him. “You i***t. Why did you do that?” He smiled weakly. “Because I promised I'd protect you.” She leaned closer. “And I promised I'd never hide my love again.” Their eyes met. Then Amara kissed him. This time, there was no fear. No secrets. No lies. Only love. The police arrested Chike's uncle and his grandmother. Adaeze stood beside Amara, crying. “So… we're really sisters?” Amara smiled through her tears. “Apparently.” They hugged. For the first time, their family wasn't held together by lies. It was held together by forgiveness. Months later, the truth became public. The murder of Amara's father was reopened. The people responsible were prosecuted. Grace finally returned home. And Adaeze began building a relationship with the mother she thought she had lost forever. As for Amara and Chike… Their love survived everything. One evening, they returned to the old garden where they had shared their first kiss. Chike looked at her. “Do you remember this place?” Amara smiled. “How could I forget?” He took her hand. “I spent five years regretting that I left you.” “And I spent five years pretending I didn't miss you.” He laughed. “Do you regret that kiss?” Amara shook her head. “Never.” She leaned closer. “Do you?” “Not for a second.” They kissed beneath the same mango tree. But this time, they didn't hide. And years later, whenever someone asked them how their love story began, Amara would smile and say: “It began with a kiss we were never supposed to share.” Then she would look at Chike. “And became a love we could never hide.” THE END.
