Triggers

1008 Words
Ria Walden was having a panic attack, but it wasn’t a normal one. The claws that were now embedded in my left hand hurt like a b***h, but I couldn’t focus on that now. He had no control over himself, which made this situation increasingly dangerous if I couldn’t bring him out of the attack. What was the mist up to? Something had definitely triggered him, but there was no time to find out what. The mist always felt like a living person without a form to me. It has been protecting me and the people who reside here in Doc Harbor since it arrived. Did it find something hidden inside Walden? There was no time to contemplate things as Walden’s wolf began to surface. Back and forth they went with each other. Walden was fighting for control and in doing so he was able to release my hand and now it could heal. “He-lp me.” Walden gasped out. He was holding his head now. Soon a very familiar black inky substance began to leak from his nose. Walden was a Night Wolf but he wasn’t one of the returned. How was he showing symptoms of the previously infected? This meant he was connected to what was going on. The curiosity in me surged, I needed to find out or better, yet he could be the key. The elevator was still moving downward. The heart of the base was deep underground. Calming my nerves, I approached Walden again. I knelt down in front of him, sitting in the wheelchair holding his head. I could feel the pain he was in bit by bit, which was strange for me. Everything in me was drawn to him at that moment. My wolf yearned to help him. Placing my hands on top of his, I let my wolf aura travel toward him. Images began to flow through my mind. This was not my memory but his. Something or someone had blocked it, which caused his pain. In an instant, I knew what to do. I had no time to think about this new ability. Right now, I have to act. There were no secrets here within the mist. Together we would endure it and find out the secret someone wanted to hide within him…………… The Hidden Memory The boy opened his eyes, a smile across his face. Standing in front of a full-length mirror, the feeling of pride encased him as he relished how handsome he would look tonight. He was ten years old. Today a small birthday banquet planned by his mom and dad was already in full swing with his closest friends attending. The banquet was all fine and dandy, but what he really couldn’t wait for was his grandma’s big surprise she said she had for him at the banquet's ending. A knock at the door made him even more excited. It was time to cut the cake, after he changed into his second outfit of the night. He couldn’t help feeling a little more energetic than usual, it was almost as if he could fly. Sometimes he could even hear a voice inside his head, but when he told his mom about it once, she scolded him and told him never to mention it again. The birthday banquet was a success even though the gifts were just right. He wasn't fond of the cake that was made because it tasted kind of fun and he only ate a small bite to appease his mother. He didn’t understand why she was upset, but his instincts felt something was off. The boy didn’t think too much about it. After all, Rose was his mom. Grandma had made up for his dislike of the cake and gave him a special fruity drink instead. He started to feel cold five minutes after drinking it, then slowly his eyes began to close. The loud unruly screeching sound of wheels jolted the little boy awake. Everything around him was blurry, he was upset that he had fallen asleep. He didn’t want to miss his grandmother’s special surprise for him. Wanting to rub away his blurry vision, he suddenly realized that he couldn’t move. Was he being kidn*pped? But he was strapped to a strange bed. It was hard and uncomfortable. The bed even moved on its own as someone pushed it from behind. It made a weird sound. It made him scared , but he wouldn’t show fear. A silver-looking door came into view and shortly after it opened. Inside was a hidden room. The man pushed a button and the door closed and the room moved. It felt like they were falling and his reaction was caught by the person that was with him. “ Seems the dose she gave wasn’t enough. You shouldn’t be awake kid.” the man said as she approached him. The boy couldn’t react to anything as he felt a pinch and fell back into the abyss………………………………….. Walden’s mind expelled us from the memory. Something was trying to keep us from seeing further. The good news was that his pain had stopped and his breathing was now back to normal. The elevator was the trigger. He was just a little boy in that memory. What exactly had happened to him? Walden finally opened his eyes, no longer holding his head, he looked just as confused as I felt. “ Thank you for helping me,” he said gruffly. We had finally reached our destination and I wheeled him out toward the infirmary so he could use the private quarters I had there when I did research. I left him to his thoughts as we headed down the hall. I ignored the wide eyes and questioning gazes again from my comrades in passing as I spotted Bo up ahead. She had already set up my room for us. It was like we were one mind sometimes. Walden needed to get himself together before we talked about what we had seen and what it might mean.
