The explosion echoed through the crumbling walls, sending shock waves that reverberated in Maya’s bones. Dust and smoke filled the air, choking her as she fought to stay upright. Luca’s grip was firm around her waist, his strength grounding her amid the chaos. “Move!” Luca’s voice was sharp, cutting through the ringing in her ears. He dragged her toward the exit, his body shielding hers as debris rained down. The ground shook beneath their feet, a second blast roaring from the far end of the warehouse. “They’re trying to bury us alive!” Maya’s heart pounded as she stumbled, her legs unsteady. The air was thick with smoke, burning her lungs. Luca’s jaw was set, his eyes cold with fury. “They’re not getting off that easily.” They weaved through the rubble, dodging falling beams and shattered glass. Maya’s vision blurred, her senses overwhelmed by the acrid stench of smoke and burning metal. But she forced herself to move, Luca’s hand an anchor guiding her through the devastation. They burst out of the side entrance just as another explosion shattered the structure behind them. The blast sent them sprawling to the ground, heat licking at their backs. Maya’s body collided with the asphalt, pain shooting up her arm as she rolled to a stop. Luca was beside her in an instant, pulling her to her feet. “We need to keep moving. They’ll have eyes on this place.” Maya’s chest heaved as she fought for breath, the reality sinking in. This wasn’t just a warning. It was an execution attempt. They sprinted to the car, Luca’s movements precise and calculated. He shoved her into the passenger seat before climbing behind the wheel, the engine roaring to life. Tires screeched as they tore out of the alleyway, speeding down deserted streets. Maya’s pulse raced, her body trembling as adrenaline coursed through her veins. She glanced at Luca, his jaw clenched, his grip tight on the steering wheel. Rage burned in his eyes, cold and deadly. “They knew we’d be there. They wanted us dead.” Her voice was a whisper, the weight of betrayal heavy on her chest. Luca’s gaze didn’t waver from the road. “Someone’s cleaning the house. Tying up loose ends.” The truth settled in her gut like lead. Whoever was behind her father’s murder was determined to erase any trace of their involvement—including her and Luca. Her hands trembled as she stared at the destruction fading in the distance, smoke billowing into the sky. “How did they know?” Luca’s eyes darkened, his expression hardening. “Someone sold us out. And when I find out who, they’re going to wish they’d never been born.” The promise of vengeance hung heavy in the air, a chilling reminder of the world they were fighting against, a world where loyalty was bought, and betrayal was paid for in blood. The car sped through the city, weaving through traffic with dangerous precision. Maya’s thoughts raced, her mind replaying every moment, every face, every conversation. Who could have known about the meeting? Who could have set the trap? Her chest tightened as suspicion clawed at her. “The informant... he knew too much. He led us there. He knew we’d walk right into that death trap.” Luca’s lips pressed into a thin line, his silence confirming her fears. He’d suspected it too. A cold shiver ran down Maya’s spine. They were up against more than just killers. They were up against manipulators, puppet masters pulling strings from the shadows. And they were losing. Luca’s phone buzzed, his eyes flicking at the screen. His jaw tightened, his fingers gripping the wheel until his knuckles turned white. “What is it?” Maya’s voice was hoarse, her throat raw from smoke. He didn’t answer, his eyes fixed on the road. “We’re not safe here. I know a place.” Maya wanted to protest, to demand answers, but fear kept her silent. She’d trusted Luca this far. She had no choice but to trust him now. As the city lights blurred around them, Maya realized the terrifying truth that they were running out of places to hide, and their enemies were always one step ahead. "s**t! The day just got better!
