Chapter 7 – Shadows and Promises

1073 Words
Morning crept into the cabin, pale sunlight filtering through the cracks in the wooden walls. Maya woke to the soft glow, her body tangled in the wool blanket, her head resting on Luca’s chest. His heartbeat was steady, his arms wrapped around her as if to shield her from the world outside. For a brief, stolen moment, she allowed herself to forget everything, the danger, the lies, the dark legacy that haunted them. Here, in this fragile cocoon, she felt safe. But reality was a cruel thief, and the shadows waiting beyond the cabin walls were relentless. Luca stirred, his hold on her tightening before his eyes fluttered open. Confusion flickered across his face before it softened, his gaze locking onto hers. “You’re still here.” Maya’s chest tightened. “Where else would I be?” He exhaled slowly, his fingers brushing a strand of hair from her face. “Gone. Safe. Far away from all of this.” She shook her head, her eyes fierce. “I’m not running. Not until I know why they killed my father.” His jaw tightened, the darkness returning to his gaze. “Then we need to move. It’s only a matter of time before they find us.” They dressed quickly, the morning chill biting at their skin. Luca moved with military precision, checking weapons, packing supplies, his demeanor cold and detached. It was as if the man who had held her through the night had vanished, replaced by a soldier preparing for war. Maya’s heart ached, but she understood. Emotions were a weakness neither of them could afford. Not now. They stepped outside, the forest alive with the sounds of morning. Birds called from the treetops, the air crisp with the scent of pine and earth. For a moment, it seemed like any other day, peaceful and serene. But the tension in Luca’s shoulders shattered the illusion. He led her to the car, his eyes scanning the surroundings with practiced vigilance. “We’ll head to the outskirts of the city. There’s someone we need to see. Someone who might have answers.” Maya’s pulse quickened. “Who?” Luca’s jaw clenched. “An informant. He was close to my father... until he betrayed him.” The drive was tense, silence heavy between them. Maya’s mind raced with questions, fear coiling in her stomach. She kept glancing at Luca, his profile hard and unyielding, his grip on the steering wheel white-knuckled. “What if it’s a trap?” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. His eyes were cold, his expression unreadable. “Then we fight our way out. Or we die trying.” Her heart skipped a beat, but she nodded, her resolve hardening. She wouldn’t back down. Not now. They reached the edge of the city, weaving through backstreets and alleyways until they arrived at an abandoned warehouse. Luca killed the engine, his gaze fixed on the building, his body tense. “Stay close,” he ordered, his voice low. “And trust no one. Not even me.” Maya’s eyes widened. “What does that mean?” But he was already out of the car, moving toward the warehouse with lethal grace, his hand on his gun. Maya followed, her heart pounding as they slipped through a side entrance, the shadows swallowing them whole. The air was musty, the space vast and echoing. Sunlight streamed through shattered windows, illuminating dust motes that danced in the air. Luca moved ahead, his footsteps silent, his eyes scanning every corner. A figure emerged from the shadows, his face obscured by a hood. Luca’s gun was drawn in an instant, his stance rigid. “Show yourself.” The man stepped forward, his hands raised in surrender. His voice was rough, tinged with fear. “Relax, Moretti. I’m alone.” Maya’s heart raced. This was the informant. The man who might have the answers she so desperately needed. Luca’s jaw tightened. “You’ve got two minutes to convince me not to put a bullet in your head.” The informant’s eyes flicked to Maya, recognition flashing in his gaze. “You brought her? Are you out of your mind?” Luca didn’t lower his gun. “Talk. Now.” The man swallowed, his shoulders slumping. “Your father... he was betrayed. By someone close. Someone powerful.” Maya’s blood ran cold. “Who?” He hesitated, his gaze shifting nervously. “I don’t know. But they wanted your father out of the way. He knew too much.” Luca’s grip on the gun tightened. “What did he know?” The informant looked around, his fear palpable. “There’s a new power rising. Someone who wants to control everything—your family’s empire, the city, all of it. And they’ll kill anyone who gets in their way.” Maya felt the floor drop out from under her. Her father’s death was part of something much bigger than she’d realized. Luca’s voice was ice-cold. “Names. I want names.” The man shook his head, his body trembling. “I can’t. If I talk, I’m dead. You’re both dead.” Luca took a step forward, his eyes blazing. “You’re already dead if you don’t.” The informant’s face crumpled, resignation settling in. “There’s a meeting. Tonight. The man behind all of this... he’ll be there. But you go after him, and you won’t come back alive.” Luca’s jaw clenched, his resolve unwavering. “Let me worry about that.” The informant looked at Maya, his eyes filled with pity. “Your father... he tried to protect you. But you’re in this now. There’s no escaping it.” Maya’s fists tightened, anger boiling within her. “Then I’ll fight. Just like he did.” The man looked at her for a long moment, then nodded, respect flickering in his gaze. “Good luck. You’re going to need it.” Without another word, he turned and disappeared into the shadows, his footsteps echoing through the empty warehouse. Luca lowered his gun, his face grim. “We need to move. If they find out we were here...” An explosion rocked the building, the ground shaking beneath their feet. Maya stumbled, Luca’s arms wrapping around her as debris rained down. “They already know.” His words were a whisper, cold and final. The trap was set, and they were right in the middle of it.
