  CARLOS'S POV   After days out in the field, breathing in dust and sleeping next to a rifle that felt more loyal than most people I knew, stepping back into the mansion was almost jarring. Everything was spotless, quiet, and too clean....like a place that didn't remember what blood smelled like.   The first thing on my list was to find Nicholas and report in. Maybe then, I could grab a shower and pretend I was human again. But when I pushed open the door to his study, the place was empty.   "Typical," I muttered under my breath.
