Chapter One

I had seen it coming already so I was quick and immediately brought over the nearby trash can and lowered her head. The black blood was mixed with food corroded by stomach acid, and a strong stench filled the entire room. Alexa's face turned pale with fear. "W-what is going on now?" I calmly said, "This is detoxification. All the toxins have been cleared out!" After explaining to her, I tore a few pieces of napkins from the tissue box on the coffee table near me and carefully wiped the blood stains off the corners of my little niece's mouth. Lucas looked bewildered, couldn't believe it and asked, "I-Is she cured now?" Stella had been sick for three months, and even the hospital had given up on treatment and rejected her when he called them. They must have tried so many ways to get her cured. I could imagine how stumped doctors would be when they saw her. This disease was not in any medical books that they had studied. I had been specially trained by my leader to be able to deal with it and that is why I was able to work quickly to help her. "There shouldn't be any problem now. I'll reexamine her in a few days to confirm!" I said as I put away the silver needles and took out a red string from my canvas bag. At the end of the string hung a crystal-clear, beast-like fang. I placed the fang in Stella's palm and gently said, "Stella, I came in a hurry and didn’t prepare a gift for you. So, I’ll give you this instead!" Stella tightly held onto the fang and weakly smiled. "Are you Uncle Nathan? I’ve seen you in photos!" When she smiled, Stella had two dimples on her face, making her look very adorable. My heart melted at her expression as she looked up at me. She looked a lot like my brother. I happily rubbed her head. "Stella, focus on getting better. I will come to see you often!” Lucas proudly looked at Alexa and said, "You see, Nathan still has skills!" Alexa scoffed, "So what? He's still a murderer, isn't he? My family will never allow a murderer to stay here!" "You..." A hint of anger flashed in Lucas’ eyes, but he hesitated to speak. I tugged at Lucas' sleeve and smiled. "Lucas, forget it. I happen to be visiting a comrade-in-arms. I'll stay with him for a few days!" After saying that, I grabbed my canvas bag and stood up to leave. Alexa, who was sitting on the sofa, suddenly said, "The company's employee dormitory has been repaired. Go there this afternoon to inspect it and have the finance department settle the final payment!" "And inform the human resources department to lower the requirements for recruiting security guards. A bunch of useless people—we haven’t recruited a single security guard in half a month!" After speaking, she carried Stella upstairs. Lucas excitedly replied, "Alright, I’ll make sure to complete the tasks!" I naturally understood the meaning behind Alexa's words. She was subtly suggesting to Lucas to arrange a place for me to stay. Maybe she was not such a bad person or this was her way of showing gratitude that I had saved her daughter's life. Lucas brought me to the entrance of a company called Solentra Industries Ltd.. The company occupied a large area, and the office building had thirteen floors. Such a company was rare in the entire South City. I was surprised when I saw it. "This company is not small. With this scale, it should have already gone public, right?" Lucas bitterly smiled and shook his head. "We submitted the application for going public last year, but for some unknown reason, it has been delayed. I asked Alexa, but she didn’t say anything!" “This matter had become a major concern for the Smith family, and some of them even blame me, saying that things started going wrong for the company when i married Alexa” My temper rose when I heard that. They had no right to blame my brother for something that was completely out of his control, but I could not say anything, because I knew that he would not want me to. Lucas waved his hand and smiled. "Let’s go. I’ll take you to the human resources department. As a retired soldier, you are fully qualified to apply for the security guard position in our company! With me and Alexa at the company, it won’t be long before you become the head of the security department!" I nodded with a smile and followed him into the company. I was currently penniless and didn’t even have a place to stay, so I needed to solve the problem of food and shelter first, even if it meant working as a security guard. The human resources department was large, and the sound of typing on keyboards filled the office. Lucas walked to the recruitment group and explained the purpose. The recruitment staff calmly handed him a labor contract and personal information form, saying, "Take them and sign them. The backdoor leads to the garbage dump!" Lucas looked puzzled and asked, "Isn’t the backdoor garbage dump already occupied?" The recruitment staff sneered. "If he doesn’t want to do it, let him be. There are many people lined up for this role in a company like this." Lucas looked around, then whispered, "He is my brother. Arrange him at the front entrance!" The recruitment staff raised an eyebrow and sneered, "Aren’t you just a son-in-law living off others? If it weren’t for the support of the CEO, could you even be a production manager? Look at his shabby appearance. It’s already good enough for him to guard the garbage dump! You both deserve to be in the garbage dump!" A cold light flashed through my eyes for a moment. If it were just Alexa mocking me at home, I could endure it. But now even outsiders dared to mock me. Even people who did not know me. In the past, I would have made this woman kneel and beg for mercy, for speaking to me and my brother in that manner. The recruitment staff's words attracted the attention of most of the office who were working around them. In their eyes, there was either ridicule or pity. Lucas clenched his fist, his face flushed with embarrassment. I smiled lightly and said, "Lucas, let's go. I don't mind." After speaking, I took the labor contract and began filling it out. At the same time, I made up his mind to help my brother change his situation and become the most respected person in the company. He had done all this for me and was only in such a position because he married alexa to pay off the debt i was owing. He must not have known what he was signing himself for, he always protected his dignity and respect but now it seemed like nobody respected him here. I would make sure that they do, no matter what I had to do. I would help him gain his respect back. Soon, I finished filling out the labor contract and followed Lucas to the dormitory office. Fortunately, the director of the dormitory office was acquainted with Lucas and specially arranged a single room for me to stay in without any fuss. After completing all the procedures, I bid farewell to Lucas and prepared to visit the predecessor. Third person POV At the same time, in the office of the HR Department Manager... Becky James, the recruitment officer, stood before General Manager Jack Roberts. Her demeanor had changed from arrogant to charming. "Manager, you called for me?" Jack leaned back in his chair, his voice deep and authoritative. "Who was that applicant for the security guard position earlier?" She sneered dismissively. "Oh, him? He's the brother of that useless son-in-law, Lucas Steele. I assigned him to the backdoor garbage area." Satisfied with her response, she added, "Manager, I thought..." She hesitated for a moment, nervous about whether she might have overstepped. In truth, her decision had been purely selfish. Her cousin had been stuck working at the garbage area for three months, and transferring someone else to the main entrance would only stir complaints from her cousin. The manager chuckled darkly. "You did well. I'll add $100 to your bonus this month." For a moment, she was stunned. Then, realizing this was an opportunity, she stood, her confidence returning as she leaned forward slightly. "Manager, you're so good to me. How about I give you a massage to show my gratitude?" He was the son of a wealthy hotel owner, only working at this factory out of a supposed fondness for Alexa Smith. But Becky had long set her sights on him, hoping to elevate her station. If she could win him over, she might secure a life of luxury as a wealthy wife. Even if that didn’t happen, being in his good graces would ensure her position in the company. Jack, however, was uninterested in playing games. He scoffed coldly. "I have somewhere to be. If you're so eager, come to my dormitory tonight." Her face lit up at his words, seeing a glimmer of hope for her ambitions. "Yes, Manager! I'll be there."
