I held my smarting cheek, staring at my mother with surprise.
“Do you have any idea what you’ve done?’ my mother hissed. I have worked so hard to give us a life here, to make sure we’re safe, and you go and pull something like this?’
I swallowed hard, trying to hold back the tears at the corner of my eyes. I hadn’t meant for any of this to happen. I didn’t even fully realize how close I and Zane had come to crossing a line.
“I didn’t mean to,” I said, trembling.
“You didn’t mean to?” she scoffed. “You’ve been nothing but trouble since we moved here. And now this? Do you want to ruin everything for us? Do you want to destroy the life we are trying to build?”
