The black-robed wolf came at me so fast I barely registered he was moving before the wolf-bone dagger was already up, aimed straight at my chest.
Caius threw himself in front of me like he'd been shot from a cannon, and the dagger went straight into his back with this awful wet sound that made my stomach flip.
Dark magic exploded from the wound, wrapping around his body in these black tendrils that looked alive, squeezing him like a snake.
"CAIUS!" My scream ripped out of my throat and something inside me just snapped.
Golden light burst out of me without me even trying, this massive wave that hit the black-robed wolf and sent him flying backward. He crashed into a tree so hard the trunk cracked.
But I didn't have time to process my own wonders because Caius was on his knee
