Chapter 10 - tonight’s the night - Jackson PoV

It had taken months of sleepless nights, rituals under the blood moon, and Aunt Theo’s relentless determination, but she had finally managed to tear open a rift in the Veil, just wide enough for one person to pass through at a time. The air around it shimmered, unstable, humming with the kind of magic that felt alive and watching.

Lex and I would be the first to cross. Our mission: return to Talvarna the land that was once our home and seek out any remaining allies, any spark of rebellion. We didn’t know what waited for us on the other side. Only that the Veil would not hold open forever.. and that our birthright would never return to us if we stayed hidden.

I could feel the pull of it already, the weight of destiny, the scent of danger, and the faint whisper of something else calling me home.

“Tonight is the night,” I tell Lex, my voice low but firm. “Have your affairs in order.”

He nods once, though I can see the flicker in his eyes the one that says his thoughts are already with Ivy. I don’t blame him. If I had someone waiting for me, I’d want to hold on too.

But I don’t. For me, there’s no one left only the weight of what’s coming. The thought of returning to Talvarna, presses heavy on my chest. I have to be ready not just with my strength, but with my mind.

Tonight isn’t just another mission. It’s the beginning of the reckoning.

Lex PoV

“Are you scared? I’m scared, what if you never come back?” Ivy’s voice trembled, her eyes glistening with that same sadness that always undid me.

“Nothing could stop me from returning to you,” I said, trying to sound braver than I felt. “Trust me.”

When I turned eighteen and Ivy not long after, we found we weren’t mates but we made the vow to be each other to be chosen mates. It wasn’t fate that bound us; it was choice. Our choice. I don’t know what waits beyond the Veil, or if some ancient magic has already tied me to another. But I do know this, I love Ivy, and no one, not even the goddess, could make me want anyone else.

In a short time we had made a life together, bound by our love. We had a small cottage next to fields full of wild flowers, where I could see our pups running around when the time is right. Brining myself back to the present I see her eyes locking onto me.

I slide my hands up her cheeks, fingers tangling gently in her hair. I pull her close until her breath warms my lips, until there’s nothing between us but the space of a heartbeat. For a moment, the world fades, the rift, the danger, even the fear.

Her eyes lock on mine, and I swear they’re pulling me in. I kiss her — slow, desperate, full of everything I can’t put into words. All the promises, the fear, the hope. When she clings to me, I feel the tremor in her hands, the silent plea that I come back to her.

She pulls back from the kiss, “Lex, I want you” she whispers breathlessly. I feel that same hunger, the pull that’s more than desire.
