Chapter 11 In the Air

1130 Words
Dylan's POV "I shouldn't have asked for the sick leave." I tell Zander,"The Summit will be so suffocating and I don't want to go." "Meeting with a group of jerks is boring indeed, why not bring a cat with you to kill the time." Zander smirks. "Very funny." "Well, we've been on the plane. Too late to regret." He answers absent-mindly as he is reading a book. Among all the members in my pack, Zander is a unique existence, reminding me from time to time that Alpha as I am, he can simply ignore my rank. I wasn't fond of his attitude when I was younger. At that time, I was desperate to prove my power and people whoever refuse to acknowledge my strength will fuel my anger. Zander was an exception, though. That is because he patiently taught me how to pass an exam by myself instead of cheating in the examination. Having heard of this, my mother, Luna of the Silver Pack was deeply moved and encouraged me to spend more time with this honorable kid. She held a crazy idea that Zander's assistance would redeem my soul. As if my soul needs any redemption. Women are irrational and are born with the nature to jump to conclusions. Anyway, my mom put the wager on the right person and Zander did bring the best out of me (according to her opinion, of course). I learn to better control my emotion, unlike Alphas from other packs. Spoiled by their parents and supported by their subordinates, their tenet is to pursue what they treasure by all means, which is against what Zander lectured me. Zander informed me that it is necessary to show respect to girls. For examples, I shouldn't behave like Jack, Alpha from the Bluemoon pack who locked his mate in the cellar to punish her disobedience. Three days later the poor girl gave up and trade her virginity with Jack for a juicy hamburger. Rumors have it she has become Luna of the Bluemoon pack and live a happy life with Jack. Another example is Alpha Frank from the Redmoon pack, the notorious woman snatcher whose only hobby is to get into every girl's pants and have their personal stuff stored as trophies in his secret chamber. It has been a while since the last time I saw him. I ran into him, to be specific. He was playing threesome in the restroom and he wasn't embarrassed but kindly invited me to join them. I refused, of course. The scene is too mind-blowing for a 17-year-old teenager to take, let alone take part in. Word has it that Frank's soulmate is a rouge, which is why he always hangs out and rarely stays at home at night. Etc, etc. The list is endless. To prevent me from making friends with these Alphas, Zander actually made a blacklist for me to refer. I followed his advice, as always, yet this piece of suggestion seemed not to function well, for most of my fellows, known for their rudeness to girls have finished their mating process and one of them even became a father already. The fact that girls seem to prefer bad guys to gentlemen is so frustrating that I was lured to be more bad boy-like. The strategy worked, indeed. It brought me countless girlfriends yet the result is I feel more and more lonely. But I would never admit this to Mr. Black, or he would snort and say, "I've told you so". "See what I've found." Zander's voice snaps me out of the thought and I lean forward to have a closer look. "What is this?"I look at the picture on the book and hiss to him, "How dare you to read stuff about vampires? You could be seen as a spy and charged with treason and then sent to jail." "Don't worry. We are still in human world. I will put it away once the plane lands."Zander shrugs and insists that I should read the stuff. "Shapeshifter?I've already known what this creature is." I glance at the picture and don't find anything particular. "Read it carefully." "Why must I do this? You can tell me since you've read it. Just free my from the burden, Advisor." "Reading is not a burden." Zander retorts. "Not to you, but to me." I cover my forehead and pretend to be uncomfortable, "Oh no I am dizzy." "Stop acting. You are attracting attentions."Zander hisses to me. I look around and smile at the girl who is staring at me, she blushes and shows sudden interest in watching the clouds outside the window. I turn to Zander and lower my vocie. "For moon goddess' sake, we are on a plane. Theoretically speaking the turbulence may cause me feel sick so it is reasonable that I don't want to read a book right now." "Are you feeling sick?" "Yes, heart-brorken because my Advisor refused to save me from the torture." "Reading is not torture."Zander argues and sighs, "Fine. If I understand correctly, the book claims that shapeshifters are hiding their identities in a smarter way. Through years of evolutions, this species no longer stay deep in the forest or uninhabitable mountains because they've discovered a suitable place to live an easier life." "Cities." "Exactly."Zander continues, "Unlike us, they are not patient and humble enough to learn things from human beings. So they change their original forms into pets, according to a questionnaire in last year, 50% shapeshifters tend to become cats, 39% prefer to be dogs, and the rest vote for other animals. "That's ridiculous. They are not humble enough to learn from human but are humble enough to be human's slaves?" "There must be some misunderstandings here, cultural differences, I will say." Zander shrugs,"the shapshifters do not consider pets as slaves of human beings. On the contrary, they believe human beings are pets' slaves, for the former provide the latter with food and drink. " The logic they adopt is so weird that I am speechless. "The shapeshifters' transfigurations are nearly perfect so human beings are totally unaware of their existence. Besides, it is extremely difficult to tell the difference from a shapeshifter and a pet because they just look the same. Nevertheless, there is one way to distinguish shapshifters from human pets, which is to speak to them, for shapshifters can understand human language. The only question is, most of them will pretend that they don't know to secure their undercover." "Are you——"I stare at Zander when an idea strikes me, "Are you suggesting that Snowball is one of them?" "Theoretically speaking, yes." Zander nods, "And theoretically speaking, it could be a male. Based on the hostility it holds against you, you should be more careful."
