••• Isabella’s POV •••
Oh. My. Goddess.
On one side of the long, grand dining room, my mom and an older he-wolf, whom I presumed was her second chance mate and former Alpha of the pack, sat, while on the other side…
I blinked again, and again.
Because I couldn’t not do it.
Because I had to.
Because it was like my mind was playing tricks on me.
Because… Oh. My. Goodness…
I was wrong.
So very wrong.
There sat Alpha Raiden, and he did not have Dissociative Identity Disorder.
There were actually three of him! Or them!
He was - or they were - actually triplets!
And they hadn’t changed their clothes or hairstyles. Alpha Raiden still had that playful smirk I had seen when I met him earlier, the more composed one was still in his suit, his brows furrowed together, but it didn’t hide the way his eyes zoning intensely at me as if he was trying to figure me out, while the piano maestro still looked the kindest with his soft smile.
“Isabella?” My mom’s voice broke through my reverie, and my head swiveled, eyes snapping toward her from the gorgeous Alphas sitting at the opposite head of the table from her and the former Alpha.
“Oh… Umm…” I felt my cheeks get hot. I was mortified that I had been standing there gawking openly at the triplets Alphas.
Thankfully, Mom stood from her seat and approached me, tugging me along so I stood closer to the dining table. Her grip was strong, like she was annoyed at me for acting like a fool, but her smile was pleasant. Who knew my mom was such a fine actress? I sneered inwardly.
She turned me to face her mate first, who, just like her, had a pleasant smile, but there was something glinting in his eyes, something I couldn’t decipher, but it was gone in a split second.
Even from how he was sitting, it could be seen that he was still fit, and his Alpha aura would still be strong. I imagined he was a great Alpha during his reign.
“Alpha Elijah, let me introduce you to me…daughter, Isabella,” my mom said, and I wondered if anyone else heard the slight hesitancy before she said the word “daughter”. Anyway, I didn’t overthink it. She obviously didn’t want me, so I should be used to it.
Then, before she turned me toward the triplets, I faced them because I could do it myself. I wasn’t some marionette my mom needed to steer around.
“And you have met Alpha Raiden before,” Mom said. I didn’t correct her that I had met all three of them because it was humiliating. I was very rude to the other two, though if they were like Alpha Raiden, they deserved it as well.
My eyes twitched when Alpha Raiden gave me a wave, a wink, and a “Hey, baby, we meet again”. How in the world was someone like him an Alpha? It looked like he hadn’t any responsible bones in his body at all!
Mom gestured to the one with the suit. “He is Alpha Adrien, the oldest of the triplets.”
Alpha Adrien only nodded at me, but I breathed a secret sigh of relief because the lines on his forehead had smoothed. When he was frowning, he looked too…dominating, it kinda unsettled me. Oh, he was hot, there was no doubt about it, but cold at the same time, if you could imagine it.
“And the last one.” Mom gestured to the one who made my heart pound because of how serene he looked earlier. He would look great in a painting. “Is Alpha Darien. He is the youngest of the three.”
My eyebrows nearly shot to my hairline. Youngest? I would have considered Alpha Raiden the youngest with his playful personality. But luckily, my eyebrows didn’t betray me. They were able to stay relaxed, although they felt like they wanted to rebel.
Alpha Darien had that signature soft smile of his, and I couldn’t help but smile back. Hey, although I hated Alphas, I could still appreciate it when a handsome Alpha was looking at me with such a gentle expression and soft smile.
“I’m Isabella,” I blurted out and felt like face-palming the next second because my mom had told everyone my name, hadn’t she? Alright, let’s just pretend she didn’t. I didn’t need to feel awkward. I refused.
In the end, I was seated next to my mother. Dinner wasn’t as awkward as I thought it would be with Alpha Elijah asking me lots of questions about myself. The basic questions like my age, why I decided to come here, which I answered him with the same lie I had provided Alpha Raiden before.
When Alpha Elijah asked me what my future plan was, and I told him the truth, that I would be looking at part-time jobs while waiting for any acceptance to any of the colleges I had applied to, he frowned and looked at his three sons. I had a bad feeling about it, and his next sentence proved my instinct to be true.
“Well, Isabella, if you need a job, I’m sure my sons can provide you with-”
“Oh, no, Alpha Elijah,” I quickly interrupted him. I knew it was very rude to cut an Alpha off mid-sentence, or even anyone, really, except maybe if they were your friends, not that I would know since I had none, but the thought of job offers from his three sons made me shudder.
“I want to look for jobs myself.” I felt my mom pinch my thigh under the table, and I tried not to wince, but placed a grateful smile on my face instead. “I’m very grateful for the offer, but I don’t think I’ll fit the job descriptions the three Alphas have.”
Yeah, like a stripper. I’d rather die, or maybe I could kick Alpha Raiden in the nuts, since thinking about it still made me angry, and that one slap didn’t feel enough now.
Alpha Elijah glanced at his three sons, and I groaned inwardly because it looked like they were mindlinking each other, talking about me, no doubt. But what could I do about it? Nothing except to pretend I didn’t notice it.
“Well, Isabella, the offer will always stand, and if you need anything at all, don’t hesitate to let any of the Omegas know,” Alpha Elijah said finally. “If it’s for something more important, you could find any of the Betas or them.” He waved his hand toward his three sons.
“Thank you, I will remember it,” I replied with a smile because I felt my mom’s hand ready to pinch me again if I weren’t being polite.
The rest of dinner felt stifling for me because I was left out of any conversation. Mom and Alpha Elijah seemed comfortable eating their meals quietly while the three Alphas sometimes conversed about things I didn’t understand.
It gave me a chance to steal glances at the triplets, though. I wondered how three people who looked exactly like each other could also look so…different. Their clothes? Their hairstyles? Their personalities? Their auras? Maybe all of the above.
And their names… Adrien, Raiden, and Darien. What interesting choices of names! Either Alpha Elijah and the triplets’ mother were too lazy to think of different names, or they were too smart at naming their sons because it was a unique way of rearranging the same Alphabet to name them.
Suddenly, a giggle burst out of my mouth when I wondered whether they had ever fooled anyone by pretending to be the others. I couldn’t imagine the serious Alpha Adrien trying to act playful. It must be painful to watch.
When I realized the dining room had quieted and looked to my left and right to see all eyes were trained on me, I blushed and quickly apologized. “I’m sorry, I just thought of something that happened a while back with my friends.”
Lies.
My mom was about to pinch me again, but I managed to swat her hand away as subtly as I could. Seriously, did she not know it was a form of abuse, too?
After dinner was finished, my mom and Alpha Elijah decided to retire for the night while the triplets told their dad they were going to discuss their business in the study.
“Isabella, don’t sleep too late,” Mom advised in a motherly tone, but only I knew it was kind of a warning for me not to cause any trouble.
“Yes, Mom,” I replied with a roll of my eyes since I was the only one left in the dining room and they couldn’t see me anymore.
I needed to talk to her about not treating me like a child anymore.
But then an abrupt thought struck me. Why wasn’t I able to mindlink with my mom? We were a family. I went through my memory and found we could mindlink when I was little until she rejected my dad and severed her tie with the Grey Dusk Pack.
I tried searching through each link, but couldn’t find the one that connected me to her. Huh, that was strange. Could it be that because she had found a second chance mate and stepsons, we couldn’t mindlink each other anymore? I guessed I had to do some research on it because if I asked her, she wouldn’t tell me anything, anyway.
Groaning, I thumped my forehead against the table. If this were an example of how each meal would be from now on, I might perish from boredom soon.
After what seemed like forever, I sighed and decided to return to my bedroom, since there was nothing to be done. I might as well browse the internet for any job vacancies around the area.
I also decided with resolution that I had to apologize to Alpha Adrien and Alpha Darien for how rude I was to them the next time we met.
As I walked through the hallway, I passed by a door and stopped when I heard my name being mentioned.
