CHAPTER TWELVE

1368 Words
THE MAN BEHIND THE SECRET Amelia couldn't move. The message remained on her phone. YOU STILL DON'T KNOW WHO ADRIAN REALLY IS. She slowly looked at him. Adrian noticed the change in her expression. "What is it?" Amelia locked her phone. "Nothing." He knew immediately that she was hiding something. But instead of pressing her, he simply nodded. "All right." Marcus watched them carefully. "We should leave." Adrian looked at him. "Yes." They returned to the main building, but Amelia's thoughts remained in Elena Vale's old studio. Who was Adrian really? And why did the person sending those messages want her to distrust him? --- The next morning, Amelia arrived at the company alone. She had made a decision. She wasn't going to accuse Adrian. Not yet. Instead, she would observe him. She wanted to know whether his actions matched his words. When she reached his office, she found him reviewing documents. He looked up. "Good morning." "Good morning." "You came early." "So did you." He smiled. "I usually do." Amelia remained standing. "I want to ask you something." "Go ahead." "Why did you agree to help me?" Adrian put down his pen. "Because you needed help." "That's all?" "No." Her heart skipped. "Then what?" Adrian looked at her. "Because I feel responsible." "For Daniel?" "For what happened to you after he died." Amelia frowned. "You didn't cause his death." "I know." "Then why?" "Because I knew something was wrong." She waited. "And I didn't do enough." His voice was quiet. Amelia saw regret in his eyes. For the first time, she realized Adrian wasn't simply protecting a company. He was carrying guilt. --- Adrian stood and walked toward the window. "Daniel came to me because he believed someone inside the company was stealing information." "Marcus said that." "Marcus told you?" "Yes." Adrian nodded. "Then you already know part of the story." "What don't I know?" Adrian turned. "Daniel suspected someone was using my mother's foundation." "For what?" "To recruit young artists." Amelia frowned. "What's wrong with that?" "Nothing." He paused. "Unless the people being recruited were being used to gain access to private collections." Amelia's eyes widened. "Children?" "No." Adrian shook his head. "Adults." She breathed easier. "But what did Daniel discover?" "Names." "Whose names?" "People connected to a private network." Amelia remembered the mysterious list. "Was Daniel investigating them?" "Yes." "Did he know who was behind it?" Adrian hesitated. "He believed he did." "Who?" Adrian looked directly at her. "Marcus." Amelia froze. "What?" "I never believed him." "But you said he was your friend." "He was." "Then why suspect him?" "Because Daniel's last message to me contained one sentence." "What did it say?" Adrian's expression darkened. Don't trust the man closest to you. Amelia immediately remembered her own note. The real enemy is someone he trusts. The two messages were too similar to be a coincidence. "Did you tell the police?" "Yes." "And?" "They couldn't prove anything." Amelia sat down. "This is bigger than I thought." "Yes." Adrian moved closer. "And that's why I want you to stop investigating." She looked at him. "I can't." "Why?" "Because Daniel deserves the truth." Adrian sighed. "I knew you would say that." --- That afternoon, Nadia and Maggie attended their first workshop. The instructor gave them a simple assignment. "Paint the place where you feel safest." Nadia immediately began painting. Maggie looked at her canvas. "What are you drawing?" "My home." Maggie smiled. "I thought you'd draw your mum." Nadia laughed. "She's part of my home." Their teacher walked past and stopped. "This is beautiful." Nadia smiled proudly. Then she noticed something. A small symbol had been printed on the corner of the workshop paper. The same silver circle Amelia had seen on Daniel's painting. Nadia frowned. "Maggie." "What?" "Have you seen this before?" Maggie looked at it. "No." Nadia stared at the symbol. She didn't know why, but something about it felt familiar. --- Later that afternoon, Amelia received a call from the school. "Mrs. Carter?" "Yes?" "This is the coordinator from the Vale Arts Foundation." Amelia's heart tightened. "Is Nadia all right?" "She's fine." "Then what happened?" "We noticed something unusual in her artwork." "What?" "She included a symbol that appears in one of our company's historical collections." Amelia stood. "What symbol?" The coordinator described it. Amelia's face went pale. The silver circle. "Where is my daughter?" "She's still at the workshop." "I'll come immediately." --- Amelia rushed to Vale Arts Group. Adrian met her at the entrance. "What happened?" "Nadia drew the symbol." His expression changed. "What symbol?" She described it. Adrian immediately became serious. "Where is she?" "Upstairs." They hurried toward the workshop. Nadia was sitting beside Maggie. When she saw her mother, she smiled. "Mummy!" Amelia hugged her. "Are you okay?" "Yes." "What did you draw?" Nadia showed her the picture. Amelia stared at the corner. The symbol had been drawn beside the painting. "Why did you draw this?" "I don't know." "Where did you see it?" Nadia thought. "I've seen it before." "Where?" She frowned. "On Daddy's old painting." Amelia's heart stopped. Adrian looked at her. Nadia continued. "I remember it because Daddy used to keep that painting in the study." Amelia stared at her daughter. She had never told Nadia about the symbol. That meant the symbol had been visible years ago. And Daniel had deliberately kept the painting. Adrian crouched beside Nadia. "Do you remember anything else?" Nadia shook her head. "No." He smiled gently. "That's okay." Amelia watched him. There was nothing calculating in his expression. He was simply concerned about Nadia. And that made her feelings even more complicated. --- That evening, Adrian drove Amelia and Nadia home. Nadia sat in the back seat, talking excitedly about the workshop. Adrian listened. "What did you enjoy most?" "The painting." "And what did you paint?" "My home." Adrian smiled. "That's a good subject." Nadia looked at him through the mirror. "What do you paint?" Adrian laughed. "Nothing." "You should." "Why?" "Because my mother says everyone has something inside them that needs to come out." Adrian glanced at Amelia. "Your mother is right." Amelia looked out the window, trying not to smile. --- After dropping Nadia at home, Adrian remained outside with Amelia. "I want you to promise me something." "What?" "If you discover anything else connected to that symbol, tell me." "Why?" "Because I think Daniel knew more than we realized." Amelia nodded. "All right." Adrian looked at her. "And Amelia..." "Yes?" "Don't go anywhere alone." She raised an eyebrow. "Is that an order?" "No." He smiled. "A request." She smiled back. "Fine." For a moment, neither moved. Adrian wanted to say something. Something he had been holding back for weeks. But he stopped himself. He wasn't ready. Neither was she. --- That night, Amelia returned to Daniel's painting. She examined the symbol again. Then she noticed something she'd missed before. The silver circle wasn't simply a symbol. There were tiny letters beneath it. She took a photograph and enlarged it. Three words appeared. VALE. TRUST. FOREVER. Amelia stared. Then she remembered Adrian's mother. Elena Vale. Daniel. Marcus. The company. The foundation. Everything seemed connected. Her phone suddenly vibrated. Another unknown message. YOU ARE FINALLY SEEING IT. Amelia typed: Who are you? The response came immediately. Someone who knew Daniel better than you think. Amelia's heart raced. She typed again. Tell me who killed him. There was a long pause. Then: I will. Another message appeared. But first, ask Adrian why Daniel once asked him to protect you. Amelia froze. Protect me? She had never known Adrian and Daniel had discussed her. Before she could respond, another message arrived. And ask him what happened the night Daniel died. Amelia slowly lowered her phone. Across the city, Adrian stood in his apartment, staring at an old photograph of Daniel. He whispered: "I'm sorry." Then he turned the photograph over. On the back was a date. The exact date Daniel died. And beneath it, in Adrian's handwriting, were five words: I promised to protect Amelia. He had kept that promise for two years. But now Amelia was finally asking questions. And Adrian knew the truth could destroy the fragile trust growing between them.
