I gasped, turning toward where I heard the sound from. It came from somewhere behind us—low, muffled, like someone speaking through metal. The corridor lights buzzed faintly, one of them flickering just enough to make the shadows move. I blinked hard, trying to focus, but the edges of my vision pulsed with light spots. Adrian’s hand brushed my arm. “Did you hear something?” The sound of his voice grounded me for a heartbeat.
