## Chapter 6: The Storm at Neelambari The agonizing news of Krishnan’s sudden return did not take long to cross the grand thresholds of the 'Neelambari' estate. When Vrinda first heard the fragmented whispers from the household maids—that Krishnan had returned from his distant workplace not alone, but with a beautiful, mysterious woman—her heart stopped beating for a terrifying second. The delicate porcelain teacup she was holding slipped from her fingers, shattering into a hundred jagged pieces across the polished marble floor. "It's a lie... it has to be a lie!" she whispered to herself, her voice trembling violently as she backed away from the mess. Without thinking about her appearance, her status, or what her father would say, a chaotic wave of panic and raw desperation completely overrode her senses. She sprinted out of the grand mansion, her long hair flying wildly in the wind, ignoring the frantic cries of the servants calling her back. She ran blindly down the winding, unpaved rural roads, her chest burning with a frantic, suffocating agony. Her mind was a raging battlefield of denial. Just days ago, he had looked into her eyes and told her that he was leaving solely because of his family's crushing poverty. How could he have brought another woman back into his home so quickly? Was his entire stance on their social divide just an elaborate excuse to hide someone else? By the time Vrinda reached the courtyard of Krishnan's modest house, she was gasping for air, her face pale and her eyes wild with a mixture of profound anger and devastating sorrow. There, under the gentle shade of the courtyard tree, the agonizing reality unfolded before her eyes. Krishnan was kneeling on the dirt floor, carefully holding a small clay bowl of warm medicinal broth. Sitting on the raised earthen porch right in front of him was Aparna. Krishnan was speaking to her in a soft, incredibly gentle tone that Vrinda had never once heard him use with anyone else—not even with her. Aparna was flinching slightly, her fragile frame wrapped in a simple, clean cotton saree that clearly belonged to Krishnan's sister, her vacant eyes fixed entirely on him with an innocent, dependent gaze. "Krishnan...!!!" Vrinda’s voice tore through the quiet afternoon air like a sudden, violent thunderclap, laced with a potent mixture of rage and heartbreaking betrayal. Krishnan froze. He slowly stood up, placing the medicinal bowl aside on the wooden window sill, and turned around to face her. His expression instantly hardened into that familiar, unyielding mask of stone, though a faint flicker of pain crossed his eyes upon seeing her completely disheveled, weeping state. "Vrinda? Why are you screaming like this in my courtyard?" Krishnan asked, his voice steady but low, trying to maintain a calm exterior. "What is the meaning of this, Krishnan?!" Vrinda shrieked, taking a few aggressive steps forward, her finger pointing violently at Aparna, who instantly cowered back in sheer terror, burying her face behind the wooden pillars of the veranda. "You told me you didn't have time for love! You told me you were drowning in debts and had to flee to the mountains just to keep your family alive! Was all of that just a cruel, calculated lie to get rid of me?!" "Calm down, Vrinda," Krishnan commanded quietly, stepping in between her and the trembling Aparna to shield the frightened girl from Vrinda's explosive wrath. "You are jumping to wild conclusions without knowing anything. This has nothing to do with what I told you." "Then tell me the truth!" Vrinda screamed, the hot tears finally spilling over her cheeks, her voice cracking under the weight of her fractured pride. "Who is she? Why is she wearing your sister's clothes? Why are you tending to her with so much devotion? I have begged you for a single drop of affection for years, Krishnan, and you threw it back in my face because I am rich! But you can bring this strange woman into your home and care for her openly?! My love for you was the only thing I lived for, and you have completely trampled it to pieces!" "She is a patient, Vrinda!" Krishnan finally raised his voice, his own hidden frustrations breaking through his calm exterior. "Look at her! She was chained like an animal in a dark, rotting cabin up in the mountains, abused and left to die because she is severely ill. She has absolutely no one else in this world. I didn't bring her here as a lover or a wife. I brought her here out of sheer humanity because my conscience wouldn't allow me to leave a helpless soul to perish in a living hell!" "Humanity?!" Vrinda laughed bitterly, her voice hollow and dripping with agonizing heartbreak. "You expect me to believe that? You brought her all the way to your village, into your own house, just out of pity? No, Krishnan... you did this to spite me. You did this because you knew it would kill me! I cannot live without you, Krishnan... I have told you a thousand times that you are my entire existence! And yet, you chose to become a savior to a stranger while leaving me to drown in my own tears!" "Your love is selfish, Vrinda," Krishnan said, his words dropping like heavy weights into the silence that followed her outburst. "You only see your own desires, your own luxury, and your own heartbreak. You cannot comprehend the stark realities of survival or the value of a human life that is on the verge of destruction. Go back to your mansion. You do not belong in this world of suffering." "I am not going anywhere!" Vrinda cried out, completely hysterical, her hands clutching at his sleeve in a desperate, final plea. "Tell me you don't care about her! Tell me she means nothing to you!" Krishnan aggressively pulled his arm away from her grip, his eyes completely devoid of any warmth. "Aparna stays here, and I will do everything in my power to nurse her back to health. Your tears change nothing, Vrinda. Now, please leave before my mother collapses from the stress of your drama." Vrinda stared at him, her heart completely fracturing into a million irreparable pieces. The unyielding, cold determination in his eyes told her everything she dreaded to know. He was willing to fight the entire world for this strange, broken girl, while he had easily discarded Vrinda's years of devotion without a second thought. "You will regret this, Krishnan..." Vrinda whispered, her voice suddenly dropping into a dangerous, chilling quiet as she backed away, her tear-stained face hardened with an agonizing mix of unrequited love and brewing resentment. "You have pushed away the only person who would have died for you." Turning around, she blindly ran out of the courtyard, her loud sobs echoing through the narrow village path as she disappeared into the fading afternoon shadows, leaving a heavy, suffocating silence behind her.
