Scarlet
I prepared to pack my things and leave, even when I didn’t know where I was going to go yet
Everything happened so fast, and it seemed like a fever dream. But it was clear as day that I was no longer needed in the pack.
As I cleared about my room, I found the honorary medal I received from the kings some years back, briefly after I became Luna. Maybe I should head to the palace, the king could give me another role, or anything at all.
I took one last glance at the place I once called home and headed for the exit, but then I heard Jonan’s voice from the corner of the forest close to the pack house. He moved suspiciously, and I quickly took cover so he wouldn’t spot me.
I watched him from afar, straining my ears to listen to what he said. His voice was a hushed whisper, but my excellent hearing skills were still very much intact.
“She’s always so full of herself.” He said over the phone, and I instinctively knew he was talking about me. This piqued my interest, and I moved closer, hiding under the shadow of a tree.
His back was turned to me, a cigarette pressed between his lips as he spoke.
“Yes I’m aware of the consequences, but I had to do it. She was getting too powerful, and it wouldn’t have been long before she overthrew me.”
My brows furrowed in confusion. What the hell was he talking about? overthrowing him? Did he break our mate bond because of that silly reason?
Jonan stilled as if sensing my presence. He turned around, his gaze scanning the surrounding area, but I remained in hiding, careful not to make any sudden movement. When he didn’t see me, he turned back around and continued the conversation, and my gut told me to record the conversation so I did.
“The accident was necessary to keep her in check and now that she has exhausted her usefulness to me, I can finally enjoy my role as Alpha.”
A chill ran down my spine, my heartbeat drumming in my ears. What about the accident? Wasn’t that a natural occurrence? Or….
My eyes widened in shock, realization hit me harder than a large brick to the head. The accident was planned. And Jonan was the mastermind behind it.
The pieces clicked together so perfectly, but I still found it hard to believe. How could he be so cruel? To his mate? To his Luna? And all for what? To satisfy his puny ego?
We swore an oath to always stand by each other, to protect each and face obstacles together. But to Jonan, those promises meant as little as I did to him.
My wolf cried out in pain within me, the betrayal hurting more than anything I’ve ever felt before. I felt like I was breaking into a million pieces, unraveling in sorrow.
The air grew thicker as I tried my best to hold back sobbing, trying my best to remind myself that Jonan wasn’t worth my tears. I had given this man everything and more, and this is how he repaid me?
A turmoil of emotions raged within me, hurt, anger, frustration, and shame. I was ashamed of myself for falling into his trap, fooled by his sweet promises of hope. But I knew the bitter truth now. Jonan never loved me. He had only used me for his selfish gain.
With a shake of my head, I pulled myself together. Looking down at my phone that held the recording that would soon be his ruin. All I had to do was show this to the king and—
I froze as I felt a hand on my shoulder.
“You should have just left quietly Scarlet.”
His voice dripped with malice, and I quickly spun around to defend myself, but it was already too late. He grabbed me by my collar and tossed me against a nearby tree.
Pain shot through my body, and coughed out blood as I fell to the ground. Even still I hugged the phone close to my chest, but Jonan came and snatched it from my hands, going forward to smash the device against the ground.
I tried to crawl away, and he just threw his head back and laughed at my efforts. Jonan’s eyes locked onto mine, a sneer spreading across his face.
“You are something,” he said, pressing the heel of his boot against my back to stop me from moving. “But watching you try so hard is beginning to annoy me.”
I writhed and thrashed under his hold, ignoring the pain as I desperately tried to get away. But it was no use.
“Why?” I managed to get out, raising my gaze to meet his. “Why would you do this to me?”
Jonan hummed thoughtfully, stroking his chin. “Because you forgot your place in my life, which is beneath me, Scarlet. All I did was remind you.”
And with that, he struck me with his powers, his claw digging into my back and through my body. Blood dribbled down my chin and nose, the world around me spinning.
As I lay there, helpless and vulnerable, Jonan towered over me, his eyes gleaming with sick triumph. “You’re nothing but a useless, crippled wolf,” he spat. “And now, you’re nothing but a dead wolf.”
And with that, he turned and walked away, leaving me to die alone in the forest.
……
I woke with a loud gasp, my hands flying to my stomach. Beside me sat Jonan, and my eyes widened in horror as he smiled at me, taking my hand in his.
“Congratulations my love.” he beamed, a huge contrast to the man who had my blood dripping down his claws.
“Let go of me!” I jerked out of his grip and moved to get up. I paused when I could feel my legs, ignoring Janon’s confused expression.
I could feel my legs. How was that possible? I was bleeding out a minute ago wasn't I? Or…..could it be?
“What year is it?” I demanded, and Jonan shot me a confused stare.
“Why are you—”
“Answer me!” I cut him off, and he flinched at my outburst, fishing into his pocket to show me his phone.
My eyes narrowed down at the date on the screen. Jan 18th, 2019. I gasped, looking down at my legs.
That was two years before my accident.
I couldn't believe my eyes, but it was right in front of me.
I went back in time.
