Chapter 5 : First Steps Toward a Dream
The gentle morning sunlight spread across the flower garden, painting the countless blossoms in shades of gold. A refreshing breeze drifted through the air, carrying with it the sweet fragrance of roses, lilies, sunflowers, and orchids. Sitting beneath the shade of a tree, Claire held a notebook in her hands, busily writing down ideas. Over the past few days, much of the sadness had disappeared from her face. The sparkle that once belonged to a successful businesswoman had slowly returned to her eyes. Suddenly, she closed her notebook and looked toward Adrian, who was watering the plants nearby.
"We need to find a good location for our flower store."
"You know how expensive good places are in New York."
"But we have to start somewhere, right?"
"Let's go look at some places today."
Adrian turned toward her with a smile.
"Understood, boss."
"Our new company has a new CEO."
Claire burst out laughing.
"Stop flattering me."
"And hurry up."
"Bring your bike."
"Bike?"
Adrian froze instantly.
The smile on his face disappeared.
Inside his mind, alarms started ringing.
'Oh no… where am I supposed to get a bike from?'
'I just casually told her that I work as a delivery guy.'
'Delivery guys are supposed to have bikes.'
'What do I do now?'
For several seconds, he simply stood there, lost in thought. Claire looked at him curiously and snapped her fingers.
"Hey!"
"Where did you disappear to?"
"Where's your bike?"
Adrian snapped back to reality.
"My… bike?"
Claire nodded.
"Yes."
"That delivery guy bike."
Adrian immediately felt sweat forming on his forehead.
"Well…"
"My friend borrowed it."
"Oh."
Claire nodded.
"Then call him."
Adrian nearly panicked inside, but he forced himself to remain calm.
"Sure."
"I'll call him right now."
After thinking for a moment, Claire smiled.
"If it takes too long, forget it."
"We can just walk."
The moment those words left her mouth, Adrian's heart almost stopped.
'You can walk just fine…'
'But what about me?'
'The ring that protects me from sunlight is in my other house.'
Instinctively, he glanced toward his finger.
Then he froze.
His eyes widened.
'Wait…'
'I wore Dad's ring when I came here.'
'Good thing.'
'Who would've guessed I'd run into a disaster like you?'
Claire's voice interrupted his thoughts again.
"Hey!"
"Where did you disappear this time?"
Adrian coughed awkwardly.
"Nothing."
"Besides, New York is still pretty far from here."
"And your wound hasn't fully healed yet."
"Let's take it easy."
"My friend will bring the bike in twenty minutes."
Claire nodded.
"Hmm."
"That's fine."
"I shouldn't push myself too much anyway."
"We can wait."
Adrian immediately walked away and pulled out his phone. A few seconds later, a cheerful feminine voice answered.
"Hi, Boss!"
"Where have you been?"
"You disappeared for ten whole days."
"Everyone at the office has been worried."
Adrian sighed deeply.
"Maya."
"This isn't the time for chatting."
A soft laugh came from the other side.
"Maya is always available for you, Boss."
"So tell me."
"What do you need?"
"I need a bike."
"Deliver it to the flower house."
"In ten minutes."
Silence followed.
"Wait…"
"A bike?"
"But since when do you ride bikes?"
"And all your employees use cars."
Adrian's tone became serious.
"Maya."
"I need a bike in ten minutes."
"That's an order."
On the other side, Maya pouted.
"You cruel man…"
Then she hung up.
Meanwhile, in the heart of Manhattan, inside a luxurious office on the tenth floor of a skyscraper, Maya leaned back in her chair with an annoyed expression.
"Honestly…"
"Boss does the weirdest things."
Suddenly, her eyes landed on a beautiful motorcycle parked outside through the glass wall overlooking the parking lot.
Her eyes lit up.
Immediately, she called one of her bodyguards.
"Do you see that bike outside?"
"Yes, Miss."
"Pay the owner twice its value."
"And send the bike to this location immediately."
The bodyguard nodded respectfully and left without asking questions.
Maya smiled proudly.
"Problem solved."
"But seriously…"
"Where on earth did Boss get himself stuck this time?"
A moment later, she shook her head.
"Not my problem."
"He gave an order."
"I simply carried it out."
Back at the flower garden, Claire sat comfortably in a chair, enjoying the fresh air. Adrian soon returned with a forced smile.
"My friend will be here with the bike in twenty minutes."
Claire smiled warmly.
"Your friend must be a really nice person."
Adrian laughed awkwardly.
"Yeah…"
"Very nice."
But inside, he prayed desperately.
'Please, Maya…'
'Don't send some ridiculously expensive superbike.'
'Otherwise, this girl won't think I'm a delivery guy.'
'She'll think I'm an alien.'
"Seriously, where is your friend?"
Claire placed both hands on her waist and looked at Adrian suspiciously.
"It's been so long."
"When is he coming?"
A smile remained on Adrian's face, but inside, he was already beginning to panic.
'My friend is coming?'
'Right now?'
'Maybe in my dreams!'
He complained silently in his mind.
Just then, the sound of a motorcycle echoed from the distant road. Relief immediately appeared on Adrian's face.
"There he is."
He smiled.
Claire also turned toward the sound. A few moments later, an expensive-looking motorcycle stopped in front of them. The rider removed his helmet and stepped off the bike. The moment he saw Adrian, he instinctively lowered his head respectfully, almost bowing, but suddenly stopped halfway. For a second, an awkward expression appeared on his face, as if he had realized something important. Adrian simply smiled naturally and walked toward him.
"Hey, buddy!"
"How's everything?"
"I heard your mom wasn't feeling well."
"You took her to the hospital, right?"
"How is she now?"
The bodyguard, who had looked nervous a moment ago, immediately relaxed. He glanced at Claire and smiled.
"Everything's fine, Adrian."
"I was actually coming to return your bike anyway."
"But your call came first."
Claire looked concerned.
"But isn't it difficult to find a taxi around here?"
Before the man could answer, Adrian laughed.
"No, not really."
"He grew up around here."
"He came to visit his grandmother."
The bodyguard instantly nodded.
"Exactly!"
"I came to see Grandma."
Then he looked at both of them with a smile.
"By the way, Adrian…"
"You really hit the jackpot."
"You found yourself an amazing girlfriend."
"Sis-in-law is beautiful."
Claire's cheeks instantly turned pink.
"No!"
"No, it's not like that."
"We're just friends."
A faint smile appeared on Adrian's face. Laughing softly, he placed an arm around the bodyguard's shoulder.
"She's right."
"We're just friends."
Then, lowering his voice so only the bodyguard could hear, he whispered,
"Couldn't you find something cheaper than this?"
The bodyguard whispered back nervously,
"Boss…"
"There wasn't enough time."
"And Miss Maya specifically ordered this."
Inside, Adrian wanted to grab his head in frustration.
'For once, I thought Maya would send something cheap.'
But he continued smiling.
"Anyway, give my regards to your grandmother."
The bodyguard quickly nodded.
"Of course."
Then he hurriedly left.
After the bodyguard disappeared, Claire carefully examined the motorcycle. Slowly, she narrowed her eyes and looked at Adrian.
"Wow."
"Delivery guys nowadays ride bikes like this?"
Adrian immediately raised both hands helplessly.
"Oh, come on!"
"Let's just go."
But Claire's expression slowly changed. Her voice softened.
"If you don't want to tell me what you do…"
"Then don't."
"But please…"
"Don't lie to me."
Her voice trembled.
"I hate lies."
By the time she finished speaking, her eyes had already become moist. Adrian quietly stared at her for several seconds. Guilt slowly crept into his heart. He knew he had lied to her, but telling her the truth was simply impossible right now.
After a moment, he slowly stepped closer and gently wrapped his arms around her without saying a word.
Claire froze in surprise.
But gradually, she relaxed.
A soft smile appeared on Adrian's face.
"I'm sorry."
"If I told you I didn't have a job…"
"You would think I was some useless unemployed guy."
"And honestly…"
"That doesn't sound very impressive in front of a beautiful woman."
Despite the tears in her eyes, Claire couldn't help smiling.
"Oh really?"
"So being a delivery guy makes you look cooler?"
Adrian laughed.
"I guess it does."
Slowly, the two separated.
Claire smiled warmly.
"Fine."
"I'll let you off this time."
Then she pointed toward the motorcycle.
"Shall we go now, Mr. Mysterious Delivery Boy?"
Adrian finally let out a sigh of relief.
"After you, Boss."
Moments later, the two climbed onto the motorcycle. Neither of them realized that the journey waiting ahead would become far more important than they imagined.
Because one day…
That tiny flower shop…
Would completely change both of their lives.
