Chapter 9: Someone Waiting at Home
"So, His Highness finally remembered that he has a home?"
The moment those words reached Adrian's ears, a faint smile appeared on his face. Looking upstairs, he saw a beautiful young woman standing near the railing of the second floor with her arms crossed. Her long black hair flowed freely over her shoulders, and annoyance was clearly written across her face.
It was Maya.
For the last five years, she had served as Adrian's personal secretary. From the smallest details to the largest decisions of the company, she had always stood by his side. But for the past ten days, her boss had disappeared without saying a single word. Naturally, she had every reason to be angry.
Seeing her, Adrian smiled.
"Oh?"
"You're still awake?"
"Wow!"
Maya descended the stairs angrily.
"I've been worried sick because you've been missing for ten days…"
"And you're asking why I'm still awake?"
She threw the pillow in her hand directly at him.
"Do you have any idea how much work I've handled these past ten days?"
"I came here twice, but you weren't around."
"Your phone was off."
"No messages."
"No information."
"I was beginning to think you'd gone off to become some monk living in the mountains."
Adrian burst out laughing.
"I'm not that terrible."
Maya glared at him.
"No?"
"You disappear during the day…"
"Return in the middle of the night like some ghost…"
"And then tell me you're not terrible?"
Smiling helplessly, Adrian started climbing the stairs.
"Okay, okay."
"Sorry."
"I had something important to take care of."
Immediately, Maya spread her arms and blocked his path.
"No!"
"First answer me."
"Where have you been?"
Adrian fell silent.
For a moment, Claire's smiling face appeared in his mind.
Then he smiled softly.
"I just went somewhere to relax."
Maya narrowed her eyes.
"Relax?"
Suddenly, she noticed the dirt on his clothes and his slightly messy hair.
"Wait a minute…"
Her eyes widened.
"Don't tell me…"
"Were you with a girl?"
Adrian nearly choked.
"What?"
Maya's eyes sparkled immediately.
"Oh?"
"So that's what's going on?"
She smiled mischievously.
"Boss…"
"If you've found yourself a girlfriend, just say it."
"I'll even bring sweets."
"Have you gone crazy?"
Adrian answered immediately.
"There's nothing like that."
But the more he denied it, the wider Maya's smile became.
"Oh really?"
"Then where were you for ten days?"
Quickly changing the subject, Adrian looked at her.
"Forget about me."
"What are you doing here this late?"
Maya puffed her cheeks.
"I stayed to make dinner for you."
Adrian blinked.
"At two in the morning?"
Maya nodded quietly.
"You have stomach problems."
"If you sleep without eating, you'll wake up with pain tomorrow."
"So…"
"I waited."
For several seconds, Adrian simply stood there silently.
Then a gentle smile appeared on his face.
"Thank you."
Immediately, Maya looked away.
"Don't thank me."
"I'm just doing my job."
But the tips of her ears had already turned slightly red.
A few moments later, she suddenly remembered something.
"Oh, right."
"You ordered a motorcycle today, didn't you?"
Adrian almost wanted to grab his head.
"Yeah."
"What about it?"
Proudly, Maya smiled.
"How was it?"
"I arranged it myself."
"But honestly…"
"I couldn't understand why you suddenly needed a bike."
Adrian forced a smile.
"I just felt like it."
Maya gave him a suspicious look.
"Hmmm…"
"And why did this feeling appear after ten days?"
Suddenly, she burst into laughter.
"There really is a girl, isn't there?"
Adrian lightly tapped her head.
"Go to sleep."
"And stop acting like a detective."
Pouting, Maya folded her arms.
"Fine."
"But tomorrow morning, you're coming to the office."
"Ten days of work are waiting for you."
With those words, she headed upstairs.
Adrian remained standing there quietly.
Eventually, his eyes landed on an old photograph hanging on the wall.
A smiling man looked back at him.
His father.
Slowly, Adrian walked toward the picture and glanced at the ring on his finger.
"Dad…"
"I came here to get the other ring…"
"But I think something is starting to change in my life."
Suddenly, Claire's flour-covered face appeared in his mind.
Her messy hair.
Her angry eyes.
And the adorable way she had threatened him with a knife.
Without realizing it, a smile appeared on his lips.
But the next moment…
The smile disappeared.
Because he suddenly remembered—
That crazy girl was sleeping alone in the Flower House.
And strangely…
For the first time in a very long time…
He found himself worried about someone being alone.
Maya was about to head upstairs when Adrian's voice stopped her.
"Oh, wait."
Maya immediately turned around.
"What is it?"
Adrian thought for a moment before speaking.
"You remember the new mall we built?"
"The large corner store on the ground floor…"
"Don't lease it to anyone yet."
Maya raised an eyebrow.
"Since when did you start worrying about stores?"
She asked curiously.
Adrian replied calmly.
"Not for me."
"One of my friends needs it."
For several seconds, Maya simply stared at him. Then an unusual smile appeared on her face.
"Wow."
She folded her arms.
"The great Adrian Vaughn."
"The owner of VG Group."
"The man big businessmen wait months to meet."
"And one of his ordinary friends needs a*****e?"
There was humor in her voice.
But the smile on Adrian's face disappeared.
Silence filled the room.
Something old seemed to flash through his eyes.
Then he looked at Maya quietly.
"You know better than anyone."
His voice was calm.
"There was a time when I had absolutely nothing."
"And you were there with me."
"Since I was nine years old."
The moment she heard those words, Maya's expression changed. She lowered her head immediately.
Because she knew the truth.
Perhaps she was the only person in this world who had seen Adrian when he had nothing.
Many years ago, inside a small orphanage, two children had grown up together.
A boy.
And a girl.
Neither of them had anyone.
No one knew where Adrian had come from. One day, he had simply been found outside the orphanage gates. He had no identity. No family.
Nothing.
Except for a strange ring on his finger…
And eyes far too deep for a child his age.
And there was Maya.
Mischievous.
Stubborn.
But with a heart warmer than anyone else's.
They grew up together.
Sometimes, they went to bed hungry.
Sometimes, they fought with the other children.
Sometimes, they spent freezing nights sharing a single blanket.
But through all those years…
Neither had ever abandoned the other.
And from that day onward, Adrian had never been just her boss.
He was family.
Adrian had always been different from the other children. He learned everything frighteningly fast. While other children played, he buried himself in books. While everyone slept, he spent hours writing things no child should understand. The strangest thing was that he never spoke like a twelve-year-old. It was as if centuries of experience were hidden inside him.
At the age of twelve, he started his first small business.
That small business became a company.
Then another company.
Then another.
Gradually, real estate.
Hotels.
Shopping malls.
Technology.
Pharmaceuticals.
Shipping.
His influence spread everywhere.
And before anyone realized it, VG Group had become a name known throughout the world.
Yet no matter how high he climbed…
Adrian never forgot his past.
And he never forgot Maya.
Slowly, Maya smiled.
"Sorry, Boss."
She spoke softly.
"I was just teasing."
Adrian smiled slightly.
"I know."
Then he gently tapped her head.
"And remember something."
"A friend is never small or big."
"If someday I lost everything…"
"And that friend helped me…"
"Then that person would be the richest person in my eyes."
Maya smiled and nodded.
"Okay."
"I won't lease the store to anyone."
Then suddenly, she narrowed her eyes suspiciously.
"But…"
"There's one thing."
Adrian blinked.
"What?"
A playful smile appeared on Maya's face.
"This friend…"
"Isn't just a friend, right?"
"Maybe…"
"A little more than that?"
At those words, an image appeared inside Adrian's mind.
A flour-covered face.
A kitchen knife in hand.
And a furious Claire chasing him around the kitchen.
Without realizing it—
A smile appeared on his face.
The moment Maya saw that smile, her eyes widened.
"Oh!"
She nearly jumped with excitement.
"There's definitely something!"
"Boss is smiling!"
"In all these years…"
"This is the first time I've seen you smile while thinking about a girl!"
Adrian immediately recovered.
"Have you gone crazy?"
"There's nothing like that."
But Maya wasn't buying it.
"Wow!"
She laughed happily.
"Now I want to know even more."
"Who is the girl that managed to melt the ice around our Boss's heart?"
And far away…
Inside the Flower House…
Claire shifted slightly in her sleep.
She had absolutely no idea…
That the ordinary delivery boy she loved teasing every day…
Wasn't just the owner of a multi-billion-dollar empire…
But perhaps…
The greatest mystery that would ever enter her life.
Maya continued staring at Adrian suspiciously for several seconds. But when Adrian narrowed his eyes and glared at her, she immediately burst into laughter.
"Okay, okay, Boss."
"I won't tease you anymore."
"But the day you introduce me to that girl…"
"I'm telling her all your embarrassing stories."
With those words, she smiled mischievously and headed upstairs. Even as she disappeared around the corner, the playful grin on her face remained. Meanwhile, Adrian stood there quietly for several moments. Then he let out a soft sigh and slowly made his way toward the staircase. The entire mansion had fallen silent. Only the ticking of the clock and the sound of his footsteps echoed through the empty halls.
A few moments later, he arrived outside his room on the second floor. As soon as he opened the door, an enormous and luxurious bedroom came into view. Soft blue lights illuminated the room, creating a calm atmosphere. In the center stood a large bed, while several old photographs decorated the walls. Slowly, Adrian stepped inside and closed the door behind him.
