When Serender felt herself waking, she laid with her eyes closed on the cold ground next to the podium. She didn’t have the energy to live without her parents, to live without all of her favorite books. “Everything is gone.” She whined into the darkness that she was letting consume her. It was comfortable. It felt like the corner of her library where she sat and read poetry until her stomach growled.
The words to a sombre melody danced in the depths of her mind.
“I’m so tired of being heeerrree. Covered by darkness, shroud in feeeaaaaarrrr.” Echoing in the furthest crevices of the infinite nothingness as clear as if she was singing the words herself. In her head she ventured without fear. Not being able to see in front of her nose was only a technicality.
She didn’t know how long she had walked but eventually an opening appeared. It opened out onto a meadow. A meadow filled with purple and red flowers. Birds tweeted their songs while searching for food. The wind whistled as a storm brewed out in the ocean. Serender could hear the laughter of seagulls to the north. She made her way towards the sound and found herself on top of a hill that leveled out onto a beach. She laid on the declination of the hill and stared out into the stormy skies.
The sound of the waves crashing soon turned into screams. She could see the emotionless faces of the people walking out into the ocean in search of her. This should have made her sad but instead she felt special. She smiled and whispered to herself, “Oh isn’t that sweet. You want to die for me? Little old me?” She laughed at herself. The sky rumbled and turned a dark hue of red along with the sea.
“Are you trying to make me feel bad?” She yelled out into the dark red skies. “Isn't that what a siren does? We ‘ve been killing people for treasures and souls for ages! Why should I care now!” She stood up as she laid her harsh words on the passing winds. Then she let her body flop back to the ground.
While she stood firmly by those words, she could not help but feel a larger sense of loss. She would never find love. She had always wondered how love felt. She had read many books but none really provided clarity.
Images of her dad crying and holding her mom’s lifeless body brought back the anger that she had masked with purple and red flowers. She closed her eyes tightly and the sounds of screams died out, the wind changed direction. The sun beamed brightly. She turned on her side and let the wild breeze cover her body with sand. She could stay in the dreamscape for eternity if she chose.
After what felt like days, Serender’s body was completely covered in sand. She was nowhere near death. Deep under the pile, she wondered how Zsu was doing. In the same breath, she wondered, “If only sealife and animals existed the world would be the perfect place. “ She took a deep breath and let the particles fill her lungs then decided human’s needed to stop existing. Starting with the one who bombed her home.
Her mind was made up. She now had a purpose in life. She would spend the rest of her songs on the demise of the human race. “Now how do I get out of here?” she said to herself. She had created this place as a comfort zone. She had never gotten that comfortable before.
The brightly lit sun started to honk like an annoying alarm. [My watch.] The sound escalated over the course of a few minutes.
Serender jumped up, knocking the podium over. Her watch was buried deep inside of the backpack. In order for her to hear it from a distance, it had to be on at the max volume. The first time she lost the watch the alarm went off for 2 days. It was indeed unrelenting. Her father made sure of that.
When she finally pulled it out of her bag , she took a deep breath. She slowly pressed the alarm off button while staring at it with her mouth open. She couldn’t believe how long she slept. Her body was possibly recovering from the loss of such a major song.
It had been 4 days since she lost everything. Her brows furrowed as she thought about the death that needed to occur as soon as possible.
She would need to swim in the depths of the ocean until she reached California. She jumped to her feet, gathered a handful of gold and ten thousand in US Dollars. It was time to sing.
After pulling her backpack on, Serender made her way to the exit. She had a goal in mind and there was nothing on the earth that would stop her from completing it. She swam through the darkness at lightning speed until she burst out into the cold waters. The electricity in her tail was radiating from her waist to the tip of her fin as if warning all other predators to stay out of her way.
After a couple of hours she started to emerge from the depths. The smell of sour milk and copper filled the ocean. She poked her head out of the water, to find bodies floating for miles. Stacked on top of one another, pushing heavily against the shore line. She pushed them aside and made her way onto the beach. She was drenched in the dark red slime but continued as is.
She sat on the dark sand, infested with flies, crows, and seagulls, and worked to put her clothes on. The song in her heart felt like it would burst out at any moment. As soon as she finished, she jumped into the sky and surrounded her body with flames. She shot across America at mach speeds, breaking out windows and shaking cars.
When she arrived in front of the White House , she took a deep breath and held it. She could hear people sobbing in their homes. People ran across the lawn of the large building with papers flying out folders. Many others had taken to the streets and started rioting. “But why though? None of that matters now.” Serender said aloud. Her words boomed in the ears and minds of those near her.
She looked deep into their materialistic eyes and asked “Where can find some..” then she closed her eyes and giggled. When she opened her mouth, the song she held back thundered and rolled like lightning from her soul.
A song filled with anger, expressing her complete emptiness. The people around her started to fight each other, ripping and tearing at each other's throats and hair. Serender walked down the middle of the street. Her song apologized for being so cold and dead inside. Cars swerved to run down those on the sidewalk. People threw each other threw the already broken out windows.
She raised her arms as if welcoming the chaos. Her song was burrowing deep into these people’s hearts, she could feel it. She hit high notes that felt like they were aimed at the stars. Tears filled her eyes thinking about her mom’s body as the song embraced those that were dead and gone. Helicopters took off from their landing pads and crashed intentionally into the large buildings that vacated the President's acreage.
Her song continuously asked all the people who could hear it to seek refuge in their rage. To aggressively remove those that sought to stand in their way. She turned around looking at the c*****e, the blood splattered streets, The fires that blazed in the White House and on its lawn. She had no way of really knowing if her song would reach his ears. It was okay though, she would leave as many dead on his property as she could.
In the distance , she could hear more helicopters approaching. When they hovered at a distance from her she could see they were armed and ready to fire. There was one that hovered further back that showed to be a news copter. Either way, she wasn’t worried she had her song to protect her. She continued walking onto the driveway past the security office. The sound of the automatic guns unloading on the other helicopter brought an evil grin to her face. Men wrestled and stabbed at each other with bloody pens without shame.
She sang in a baritone voice that sounded rough but melodic. She kept her eyes to the ground as she felt her song coming to an end. “I’m alone. I aaaammmm aaaaalllooooonnnnne.”
