Chapter 3

I decided to leave early. My apartment wouldn't be ready for another two days, but I would rather sleep on a coworker's couch than wait for the Black Vultures to hold me accountable once they reviewed the security footage. More importantly, I was starting to hate the thought of leaving Knox. He changed my bandages, drove me to and from work, and really made every motorcycle avoid the residential streets. For the first time, I slept peacefully. The kinder he was to me, the less I could bear the thought of him learning the truth from someone else. I packed my things and planned to confess as soon as Knox returned. But the first person to push open the clubhouse door was a woman in a short red dress. She removed her sunglasses and tossed her keys to Prospect nearby like she owned this place. "Where's Knox?" Mason frowned. "Sienna, why are you back?" "My father left this clubhouse behind. Why can't I come back?" Her father had been the previous President of the Black Vultures. He was also the man who had brought Knox into MC when he had nothing. After her father died, Sienna continued managing some of the club's finances. Everyone believed she would eventually become Knox's "Old Lady". At least, Sienna believed so. When she saw me coming down from the top floor, her gaze settled on the oversized T-shirt I was wearing—one that clearly belonged to Knox. "Who are you?" "Nora." "I mean, who are you to Knox?" I remembered the way Knox lowered his eyes as he changed my bandages, and the slight lift at the corner of his mouth whenever he called me Trouble. "Ask him yourself when he gets back." Sienna gave a cold laugh. "I grew up here. Knox owes my father his life, and everyone in this club knows I'll be his Old Lady. As for you..." She glanced at my luggage. "You're just some trouble he brought back because he felt sorry for you." I had been ready to leave, but her words changed my mind. I set my luggage down. "If the entire club knows, why aren't you his Old Lady already?" Sienna's expression changed immediately. She didn't argue with me further. Instead, she turned and walked into the office. 30 minutes later, Knox returned with several members. Sienna then had the bartender turn on the projector. The underground garage appeared on the screen. At 1:40 a.m., I entered the garage carrying a clear plastic box. Then I peeked out from behind the bushes, watching the direction the Harley would come from. The footage was blurry, but it was clear enough to identify my face. The bar gradually fell silent. Sienna tossed a stack of complaint records onto the table. "All seven complaints came from 7C, and she is Nora Bennett, the tenant there." Every eye turned toward me. Someone quietly called me a snitch. "She damaged Prez's Harley, then pretended to be the victim so she could move onto the top floor." Sienna looked at Knox. "Are you still going to protect her?" I neither ran nor denied it. "It was me." Knox pulled off his leather gloves and walked toward me one step at a time. I had seen those hands pin a drunk man to the floor. I had also seen them pull a thumbtack from the sole of my foot. Now, he gripped my chin and forced me to look up. "You said the thumbtacks were spilled by accident." There was no emotion in his voice. "Then why were you hiding in the bushes 20 minutes before I got there?"
