Warren doesn’t pause for breath as they reach the fault in the fence. He ducks through and he would keep running, except four voices call out behind him. “Hey, Warren!” “Where you going?” He skids to a halt and turns. The Whisperer children stand in a line on the inside of the fence, peering at him. “We should go back and get Solma,” Krait says meekly. “Or Olive,” Habu agrees. “We shouldn’t go into the forest on our own.” Warren sighs. “They’re all too busy arguing,” he says. “Just like always. It’s got to be up to us. I know my bees are here and maybe those other kids have seen them. We got to go!” The boys mutter and scuff their bare feet against the dirt. They’re obviously scared.
