The beetle on Jonah’s shoulder uncouples its carapace and extends a pair of lace-like wings. It takes off and heads towards the flowers. Jonah watches it go, chewing his lip. Olive’s still kneeling in front of him but he won’t look at her.
There’s a shout from Roseann and Solma glances round to find that Tobias has managed to dodge around the doctor and now joins Nessa next to Jonah. They take up position either side of him, like a pair of prison guards, and fold their arms, glowering. It might have been an intimidating display if they weren’t both skinny, malnourished children. She raises an eyebrow.
“Can we help you?” she asks. Tobias shuffles his feet and looks to Nessa for guidance, Nessa looks murderous.
“He don’t want to talk to you no more!” she snaps
